श्रीमद् भागवत कथा पुराण तृतीय स्कंध अध्याय 28 आरंभ
मृत्यु पश्चात यमदूत ओं द्वारा जीवो का यमराज के पास ले जाने की कथा का वर्णन विदुर जी को श्रीमद् भागवत कथा सुना रहे मैथिली जी चाहने लगे हे विदुर जी देवोतीस ने श्री नारायण अवतार कपिल जी से पूछा की मृत्यु के पश्चात मनुष्य की क्या गति होती है तब कपिल देव जी बोले हे माता कर्म के अनुसार जिओ की गति सुरती अथवा दुर्गति होती है जिस मनुष्य ने जीवन पर्यंत बुरे कर्म किए हो उसकी मृत्यु के पश्चात उसका जीव प्राण को यमदूत घसीटते हुए एवं मुद्दों से पीटते हुए एवं पूरी ले जाते हैं जिस तरह संसार में रहकर दुष्कर्म करने वाले को राजा द्वारा दंडित होना पड़ता है उसके अपराध के अनुसार दंड देता है उसी प्रकार धर्मराज यमराज को धर्मराज भी कहते हैं के दरबार में कर्म अनुसार न्याय मिलता है तथा यमपुरी ले जाते समय यमदूत नीच कर्म करने वाले जीवो को बुरी तरह तारना देते हैं मृत्यु लोक से 99 हजार योजना दूर स्थित यमपुरी के मार्ग की धरती आग के गोले के समान दहकती रहती है जिस पर नंगे पांव चलते समय जीव को अत्यंत दुख मिलता है जीव का रूप अत्यंत सुषमा छोटा होता है फिर भी वह हरि माया की प्रेरणा से स्वयं को मृत्यु लोक के शरीर धारी रूप में ही समझता है और दुखी होता है भूख प्यास सताती है और अति दुष्कर मार्ग से चलते चलते थक कर विश्राम हेतु रुकना चाहता है तो उस यमदूत उसे पीटते हैं प्राणी को उस समय आने परिवार जनों की याद आती है और रोते हुए पीछे मुड़कर उसे उद्देश्य से निहारते हैं कि शायद कोई मेरी रक्षा के लिए आ रहा हो किंतु कोई दिखाई नहीं देता तब वह अत्यंत व्हीकल होता है और प्रायश्चित करते हुए यह सोचता है कि जिस परिवार जनों भाई बंधुओं के लिए मैंने पाप एवं बुरे कर्म किए आप मेरी सहायता करने हुए अभी नहीं आ रहे हैं यमपुरी में प्राणी के कर्म का लेखा-जोखा होता है और अंत में उसके कर्म के अनुसार नहीं योनि प्राप्त होती है जिसके कर्म बुरे होते हैं उसे उस हिसाब से पाप अथवा पूर्ण की होती है उस हिसाब से उतरह के नर्क में भेजा भेज देते हैं जहां पहुंचकर दुख भोंकते हुए वह प्राणी समय पूरा करता है और नई योनि में जन्म लेकर पुनः 8400000 योनियों में भटकने का चक्कर प्रारंभ हो जाता है तब कहीं मनुष्य योनि प्राप्त होती है
