श्री शिव महापुराण कथा तृतीय खंड अध्याय 38

ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा है नारद जब हिमाचल और मैं का दुख दूर हो गया तब उन्हें शिव जी के चरणों में अपना ध्यान लगा दिया उधर गिरिजा ने भी वन में पहुंचकर अपना स्वरूप ऋषि मुनि के समान बनाया तथा शिव जी के अतिरिक्त और सब का ध्यान भुला दिया था तो प्रांत वे तपस्या करने में निर्मित श्रिंक तीर्थ हो गई जो इस समय से गोरी शिखर के नाम से संसार में प्रसिद्ध है उन्होंने 64 वर्ष तक सर नीचा किया हुआ एक ही आसान पर बैठ तपस्या किए हुए ग्रीष्म काल में अग्नि में तपती वर्षा काल में खुले मैदान में रहती और शीतल कल में जल की भीतर बैठकर कठिन तपस्या करती जब इस प्रकार के द्वारा भी उन्हें फल की प्राप्ति नहीं हुई तो उन्होंने एक सहस्त्र वह वर्षों तक केवल वर्षों की ज्यादा तथा पेट खड़े और कठिन तपस्या की टाट उपरांत एक वर्ष तक केवल हरी घास और शहजादी दिखाइए फिर कुछ समय तक केवल वायु पीकर ही तपस्या करती रही हे नारद ऐसे उग्र तपस्या करने पर भी जब उनका मनोरथ पूरा ना हुआ तब वह हिमाचल पर्वत को लौट आई वहां उन्हें 3 करोड़ पर ठीक अथवा शिवलिंग बनाकर उसकी पूजन किया उन्होंने अनेक प्रकार के पुष्प गिन गिन कर उसे शिव मूर्ति पर चढ़ाई तथा दिन-रात शिवजी के पूजन ध्यान तथा रामायण के अतिरिक्त अन्य किसी बात से अपना संबंध नहीं रखा वह शिवजी के प्रेम में ऐसे मांगना हुए कि उन्होंने प्रणाम करके अपने को अपने में ही लिंक कर दिया और ब्रह्म स्वरूप में स्थित हो गई उनके इस तपस्या कल में अनेक प्रकार के कष्ट भी सामने आए कई बार उन्हें भूत प्रेत की सेवा ने चारों ओर से घेर लिया कई बार सिंह हाथी भाई साहब बेल तथा चमगादड़ आदि का स्वरूप धारण करके भूतों ने उन्हें डराया जो भूत प्रेत गिरजा को डराने के लिए आते थे उनका स्वरूप ऐसा भयानक था कि उसका वर्णन नहीं किया जा सकता उनमें से अनेक के केवल एक ही तुम्हारी वियोग में खाना पीना छोड़ दिया है अब हुए मृत्यु को प्राप्त होने वाले हैं अस्तु तुम घर चलकर उसकी रक्षा करो इस प्रकार भूत पाटो ने गिरजा का तप भंग करने के लिए अनेक छल किया परंतु गिरजा का ध्यान पाल भर कोई भी विचलित ना हुआ वह दोनों उत्साह से शिवजी के चरणों में अपना मन लगाए रहे तब गिरजा के तेज से भयभीत होकर बहुत से भूत भाग गए जो बच्चे उनमें से कोई भस्म हो गया तो कोई किसी नदी में डूब कर मर गया इस प्रकार गिरिजा के ज्ञान को भंग करने में हुए सब के सब असमर्थ रहे

Brahma Ji has said that Narad, when the pain of Himachal and I was relieved, then they focused their attention on the feet of Lord Shiva. On the other hand, Girija also reached the forest and made her appearance like that of a sage and forgot about everyone except Lord Shiva. So the place became a pilgrimage center built by doing penance, which is now famous in the world by the name of Gori Shikhar. She did penance for 64 years sitting on a single seat with her head bent down. She would stay in the open field during the rainy season, would sit in fire during summers and would sit inside water during cold weather. When she did not get any result even by this, then she did penance for one thousand years, standing on her stomach and doing difficult penance. After this, she showed only green grass and princess for one year. Then for some time she kept doing penance by drinking only air. O Narad, when her desire was not fulfilled even after doing such intense penance, then she returned to the Himachal mountain. There she made 3 crore Shivlingas and worshipped them. She counted many types of flowers and offered them to the idol of Lord Shiva. Day and night, she did not keep herself connected with anything other than worshiping Lord Shiva and Ramayana. She was so engrossed in the love of Lord Shiva that she bowed down and linked herself to him and became situated in the form of Brahma. Many kinds of troubles were faced during her penance. Many times, ghosts surrounded her from all sides. Many times, ghosts took the form of lion, elephant, creeper and bat etc. and frightened her. The form of ghosts and spirits that came to frighten Girija was so terrifying that it cannot be described. Out of many of them, only one has stopped eating and drinking in her separation. Now he is going to die. So you go home and protect him. In this way, ghosts and spirits used many tricks to break Girija's penance. But none of them got distracted till the time of Girija's meditation. Both of them kept their mind on the feet of Lord Shiva with enthusiasm. Then, frightened by the brilliance of Girija, many ghosts ran away. Some of them got burnt and some died by drowning in a river. In this way, all of them were incapable of breaking Girija's knowledge.
