ब्रह्मा जी बोले हे नारद एक बार जलधारा अपनी सभा में बैठा हुआ था शब्बीर डेटियों के अधिपति तथा समस्त देवता आदि उसके चारों ओर आमने-सामने स्थान पर बैठे हुए थे इतने में बिना शीश का राहु उसे सभा में आओ उपस्थित हुआ उनको देखकर जलधार ने शुक्र से अत्यंत आश्चर्य के साथ पूछा है गुरु इसका सिर किसने काटा है शुक्र बोले है जलधार इसके विषय में मैं तुम्हें एक पूर्वाह्न कथा सुनाता हूं जब देवता एवं दैत्य ने परस्पर युद्ध किया था देवता परस्त हुए उसे समय देते क्यों के राजा बलि थे राजा बलि शिव जी के अन्य भक्त थे उसे समय सब देवता बेटियों से हार कर विष्णु जी की शरण में गए विष्णु जी ने देवताओं पर कृपा करके यह कहा है देवताओं तुम सब जाकर देखते से मिल कर लो तथा समुद्र के दोनों किनारो का भली भांति मंथन करो जब उसे समुद्र में से अमृत की उत्पत्ति हो जी तब ही अमित को तुम सबको पिला कर देते हो के साथ चल करेंगे इस प्रकार जब तुम अमृत पान कर लोगे तब देता हूं पर प्रबल हो जाओगे यह सुनकर देवताओं ने देते क्यों के राजा बलि के पास आकर मित्रता स्थापित की ताड़ूपरान दैत्य एवं देवता दोनों मदर गिरी को बुखार कर समुद्र तट पर ले गए वहां को वास्तविक नाग को मदर ग्रीन में डालकर मदर गिरी के मंत्री बनाया गया फिर हुए सब समुद्र का मंथन करने लगे उसे समय इंद्र के परम हितेषी विष्णु जी ने एक उपाय किया उन्होंने देवताओं को पहले वास्तविक नाम के सिर की ओर खींचने के लिए कहा उसे समय व्यक्तियों ने विष्णु जी के मतलब होना समझ कर कहा कि नहीं हम सर की ओर खींचेंगे हम पूछ की ओर क्यों लगेंगे तब सब द्वितीय सर की ओर तथा देवता पूछ की और लाकर वास्तविक नाग को मदर गिरी से लपेटकर समुद्र मंथन करने लगे विष्णु जी स्वयं भी देवताओं के साथ माथे लगे दोनों पक्ष भली गणपति की पूजा करना भूल गए थे इसलिए सर्वप्रथम उसे मंथन से हलाहल 20 निकाला उसके निकलने से सब लोग जलने लगे यह सब देखकर देवता तथा देते दुखी होकर भाग चले तब इंद्र तथा विष्णु जी देवता सहित शिव जी की शरण में गए और उसकी स्तुति कर उन्हें प्रसन्न किया तब शिवजी प्रगट होकर उसे हलाहल 20 को स्वयं भी पी गए जिसे चारों ओर प्रशांत की लहर दौड़ गई

At that time, all the gods, after being defeated by the demons, went to Vishnu Ji for refuge. Vishnu Ji blessed the gods and said, "Gods, all of you go and meet him and churn both the banks of the ocean well. When nectar is produced from the ocean, then only you will make all of you drink it and we will go with you. In this way, when you drink the nectar, then you will become stronger. On hearing this, the gods came to King Bali and established friendship. Both the Taduparan demon and the gods made Madar Giri suffer fever and went to the sea shore. They took the real snake to the ocean and put it in the Mother Giri and made it the minister of Mother Giri. Then everyone started churning the ocean. At that time, Vishnu ji, the well-wisher of Indra, devised a solution. He asked the gods to first pull the real snake towards the head. At that time, the people, understanding Vishnu ji's intention, said that no, we will pull towards the head, why would we pull towards the tail. Then everyone pulled towards the head and the gods towards the tail and wrapped the real snake around the Mother Giri and started churning the ocean. Vishnu ji himself joined the gods. Both the parties had forgotten to worship Lord Ganesha. So, first of all, Halahal 20 was taken out from the churning. Everyone started burning with its release. Seeing all this, the gods and demons got sad and ran away. Then Indra and Vishnu ji along with the gods went to the shelter of Lord Shiva and pleased him by praising him. Then Lord Shiva appeared and drank the Halahal 20 himself, due to which waves of peace ran all around.
