ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा हे पुत्र आप माय त्रंबकेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग का वर्णन करता हूं जिस प्रकार मैं विष्णु जी से उसका वृतांत सुना है उसी प्रकार तुम्हें भी सुनता हूं मन लगाकर सुनो गौतम ऋषि शिव जी के परम भक्त थे वह अपने मस्तक पर भाषण लगाते सब अंगों में रुद्राक्ष धारण करते तथा हर समय शिव जी के नाम का जाप किया करते थे हुए राजा जनक के पुरोहित थे उसकी अहिल्या नमक पत्नी परम पति प्रथा थी जब उनके पुत्र उत्पन्न हुए तब वे अपने शिष्यों द्वारा तथा परिवार सहित ब्रह्मा शैली की दक्षिण दिशा की ओर जाकर एक स्थान पर तपस्या करने में सल्लग्न हुए देव के प्रकोप से 100 वर्ष तक पानी की एक बूंद भी नहीं बरसी इससे संसार के सभी प्राणी व्याकुल हो गए कोई भी परीक्षा हार ना रहा गर्मी बढ़ती जाने के कारण अधिकांश जीव जलकर भस्म हो गए ऋषि मुनि भी योग धारण करके अपनी स्त्रियों सहित किसी प्रकार समय व्यतीत करने लगे हे नारद उसे समय संसार को व्याकुल देखकर गौतम ऋषि ने वर्ष होने के हेतु वरुण देवता का तप करना आरंभ किया है पुत्र परोपकार से बढ़कर संसार में अन्य कोई धर्म नहीं है सज्जन पुरुष का यही स्वभाव होता है कि वह दूसरों की भलाई के लिए अनेक प्रयत्न करते हैं तथा दूसरों को सुख पहुंचाने के लिए स्वयं कष्ट चाहते हैं आज तू जब गौतम ऋषि ने अहिल्या शैतन्य उग्रताप किया तब वरुण ने प्रसन्न होकर उन्हें दर्शन दिया और वरदान मांगने के लिए कहा उसे समय गौतम ने उनसे या प्रार्थना की कि आप मेरे मनोरथ को पूर्ण करने के हेतु संसार में वर्षा कीजिए यह सुनकर वरुण ने उत्तर दिया यह मुनि इसे तो केवल परमेश्वर ही पूरा कर सकते हैं हानि लाभ जीवन मरण वर्षा कल या निंदा पाप पुण्य जाए पर आ जाए उत्पत्ति प्रलय तथा नरक स्वर्ग आदि बातें भगवान सदा शिव के अधीन है वह परम ब्रह्म तथा सबके स्वामी हैं वर्षा होने या ना होने उन्हीं की इच्छा पर निर्भर करता है इसलिए हम तुम्हें ऐसा वरदान नहीं दे सकते परंतु है गौतम एक बात यह भी है पड़ी है कि यदि हम तुम्हें वार नहीं देते तो यह कार्य धर्म के विरुद्ध होता है अतः आप तुम कृपा करके कोई ऐसा वर मांगो जिससे हम प्रसन्नता पूर्वक दे सकें हे नारद वरुण देवता की बात सुनकर गौतम ऋषि ने कहा अच्छा आप मुझे एक अक्षय जल का कुंड दे दीजिए इससे मेरी बात भी रह जाएगी और आपका आवागमन भी सार्थक रहेगा यह सुनकर वरुण देवता ने अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर गौतम की प्रशंसा की और एक अक्षय का माल देते हुए कहा है ऋषि तुम पृथ्वी में एक गड़ा बनाओ और उसे घड़े में इस साक्षर का माल को डाल दो हमारी कृपा से यह गड़ा जल से सदैव भर रहेगा तब वरुण की आज्ञा अनुसार गौतम ने पृथ्वी में एक गड़ा खुदा उसे जल से परिपूर्ण कर देने के उपरांत वरुण ने यह कहा है ऋषि यह गड़ा जिसका विस्तार एक हाथ है परम पवित्र तीर्थ होकर तुम्हारा नाम से प्रसिद्ध होगा और सदैव जल से परिपूर्ण बना रहेगा जो लोग इस तीर्थ की सेवा करेंगे उन्हें संपूर्ण मनोरथ की प्राप्ति होगी इतना कह कर वरुण देवता अंतर ध्यान हो गए उनका समय गौतम ऋषि भी उसे कुंड का जल पीकर अपनी पत्नी सहित अत्यंत आनंदित हुए

Brahma Ji said, O son, I am describing the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirling to you, just as I have heard its story from Vishnu Ji, similarly I am also telling you, listen carefully. Gautam Rishi was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He used to put a speech on his forehead, wear Rudraksha in all his body parts and used to chant the name of Lord Shiva all the time. He was the priest of King Janak. His wife Ahalya was a great follower of his husband. When his son was born, he went to the south direction of Brahma style along with his disciples and family and started doing penance at a place. Due to the wrath of the god, not even a single drop of water fell for 100 years. Due to this all the creatures of the world became restless. No one was able to lose the test. Due to increasing heat, most of the creatures got burnt to ashes. Rishis and saints also started spending time with their wives by adopting yoga. O Narada, seeing the world restless, Gautam Rishi has started doing penance of Lord Varun to get more years. Son, there is no other religion better than charity in the world, gentleman. It is the nature of a man that he makes several efforts for the welfare of others and himself wants pain to bring happiness to others. Today when Gautam Rishi did fierce penance for Ahalya and Shaitanya, then Varun appeared before him pleased and asked him to ask for a boon. At that time Gautam prayed to him that you make it rain in the world to fulfill my desire. On hearing this Varun replied that O sage, only God can fulfill this. Loss, profit, life, death, rain, tomorrow or slander, sin, virtue, creation, destruction and hell, heaven etc. are under the control of Lord Shiva. He is the supreme Brahma and the master of all. It depends on his wish whether it rains or not. That is why we cannot give you such a boon. But Gautam, there is one thing that if we do not give you a boon, then this act would be against religion. Therefore, you kindly ask for such a boon which we can happily give. O Narada, on hearing Varun Devta, Gautam Rishi said, okay, give me a Kund of inexhaustible water, this will fulfill my wish and your travels will also be meaningful. On hearing this, Lord Varun was very pleased and praised Gautam and giving him an Akshaya pot said, Rishi, you make a pit in the earth and put this Akshaya pot in it. By our grace this pit will always remain filled with water. Then as per Varun's command, Gautam dug a pit in the earth and after filling it with water, Varun said, Rishi, this pit whose width is one hand will become a most sacred pilgrimage site and will be famous by your name and will always remain filled with water. Those who will serve this pilgrimage site will get all their wishes fulfilled. After saying this, Lord Varun went into meditation. At that time Gautam Rishi also became very happy after drinking the water of that pond along with his wife.
