श्री शिव महापुराण कथा आठवां खंड अध्याय 40

ब्रह्मा जी बोले हे नारद गौतम ऋषि ने उसे कुंड के समीप अपने शिष्यों द्वारा खेती कराई यह समाचार संपूर्ण संसार में फैल गया तब सभी ऋषि मुनि अपनी पत्नियों एवं  शिष्यों शाहित चारों ओर से आकर इस स्थान के समीप कुटी बना रहने लगे इस प्रकार उसे कुंड के आसपास एक बहुत बड़ा तथा श्रेष्ठ नगर बस गया भूख प्यास सेबियाकुल मनुष्यों ने वहां आकर प्रसन्नता प्रदान की वरुण देवता के वरदान के कारण उसे गौतम कुंड का यह प्रभाव था कि उसमें से चाहे जितना जल भर जाए परंतु वह कभी भी काम नहीं होता था हे नारद एक दिन शिव जी की माया के वशीभूत होकर गौतम ऋषि ने अत्यंत अहंकार में भरकर अपने शिष्यों को उसे कुंड से शीघ्रता पूर्वक जल लाने के लिए भेजा जिस समय गौतम ने शिष्य उसे कुंड के तट पर जा पहुंचे इस समय मुनियों की अन्य स्त्रियों भी अपने मस्तक पर खड़े रखे हुए वहां आ पहुंची उन्होंने गौतम के शिष्यों से यह कहा कि पहले हम पानी भर ले तब तुम बाद में भर लेना यह सुनकर गौतम के शिष्य बिना पानी भर ही अहिल्या के पास लौट आए और उनसे यह कहने वालों की मुनियों की स्त्रियों ने हमें पानी नहीं भरने दिया तब अहिल्या उन शिष्यों को साथ लेकर खून पर आ पहुंची और घर खड़े होकर अपने सामने शिशुओं से जल भरवा कर घर को लौट आए यह दशा देखकर मुनियों की पत्नियां अत्यंत क्रोधित हो बिना पानी लिए ही अपने घर लौट गई और अपने पतियों को रो-रो कर झूठी सच्ची बातें मिलकर सब हाल सुनाने लगे इतनी कथा सुनकर ब्रह्मा जी बोले हे नारद स्त्रियों का तो इस स्वभाव की झूठ बोलने का होता है स्त्री को 20 से भी अधिक भयानक समझना चाहिए इसका प्रत्यक्ष प्रमाण यह है कि शिवजी हलाहल भी स्पीकर भी सदैव जागते रहते हैं परंतु विष्णु स्त्री के मुंह में पड़कर सो गया करते हैं राजा दशरथ को ही देखा उन्होंने स्त्रियों के अधीन होकर रामचंद्र जैसे अपने लड़के को घर से निकाल दिया कहावत है कि ऐसी कौन सी वस्तु है जो समुद्र में नहीं समा सकती ऐसी कौन सी वस्तु है जिससे अग्नि नहीं जल सकती ऐसा कौन सा मनुष्य है जिससे मृत्यु नहीं मार सकती और ऐसा कौन सा कर्म है जिस स्त्री नहीं कर सकती हे नारद तब उन स्त्रियों की बात सुनकर ऋषि मुनि ने अत्यंत क्रुद्ध होकर गौतम को कष्ट पहुंचने का निश्चय किया फिर वह इसी उपदेश से गणपति का पूजन करने लगे उसे समय बाद उसकी सेवा से संतुष्ट होकर गणपति ने दर्शन दिया तथा यह कहा है मुनियों तुम्हारी अभिलाष शुभ नहीं है तुम्हें अपने हाथों अपना ही विनाश करना उचित नहीं यह सुनकर उन मुनियों ने एकमत होकर कहा हे गणेश जी हम सबने गौतम को दुख पहुंचाने का निश्चय कर लिया है हमारी यह प्रार्थना है कि आप गौतम को कष्ट अवश्य पहुंच जाए तब गणेश जी उन्हें समझाते हुए बोले ही मुनियों जिसने गौतम ऋषि पर ऐसी कृपा की है वही उसकी रक्षा भी करेगा शिवजी की प्रशांत के कारण गौतम को कोई अनिष्ट ना होगा परंतु शिवजी की इच्छा के विरुद्ध होने के कारण तुम सब लोग अत्यंत दुख उठाओगे हे नारद इतना कह कर गणेश जी अंतर्ध्यान हो गए फिर हुए एक अत्यंत दुर्बल गांव का रूप धारण कर गौतम के खेत को चराने वालों सहयोग वर्ष उसे समय गौतम भी अपने खेत के समीप जा पहुंचे जब उन्होंने गांव को खेत में चढ़ते हुए देखा तो उसे एक तिनके द्वारा बाहर निकलने का प्रयत्न करने लगे परंतु उन तीन के का स्पर्श पाते ही वह गांव इस प्रकार पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़े जैसे किसी ने उसके ऊपर ब्रज का प्रहार कर दिया गौतम ने यह समाचार अपने शिष्यों को सुनाया उसे समय सब ऋषि मुनि गौतम जी के पास आ पहुंचे और उन्हें अधिकार देते हुए इस प्रकार कहने लगे है गौतम तुम्हें तुम्हारी स्त्री को तथा तुम्हारे तीन प्रकार के ताप हवन धाम विद्या चतुराई जागरण कला आदि को सबको देखकर है तुमने जो गांव की हत्या की है यदि तुम यहां रहोगे तो कोई देवता और पिता और अपना भाग लेने नहीं आएंगे इस प्रकार उन मुनियों की पत्नियों ने भी अहिल्या से बहुत दुराचार कहे तदुपरांत उन सब ने मिलकर यह निश्चय किया कि आज से कोई भी गौतम का मुख ना देखें फिर उन्होंने गौतम महिला तथा गौतम के शिष्यों को कंकर मारना आरंभ कर दिया और उन्हें अपने स्थान से निकाल दिया हे नारद उसे समय गौतम ने बहुत प्रकार से विनती करते हुए उन ऋषि मुनियों से कहा है महा अनुभव हम यहां से चले जाते हैं फिर गौतम हुआ ही लिया अपने शिष्यों सहित वहां से हटकर एक कोर्स की दूरी पर जाकर रहने लगी उसे समय गौतम ने विचार किया कि जब तक गौ हत्या का पाप नहीं छूट जाएगा तब तक ना तो किसी को हम छुए और ना देवता पिता आदि का ही कुछ कम करें यदि कोई मनुष्य धोखे सीधा रहा निकलता तो वह अपने मुख को कपड़े से ढक कर उन्हें कंकर मारता था उसे समय वह अत्यंत व्याकुल होकर रुद्रणाग करने लगते इस प्रकार जब 15 दिन व्यतीत हो गए तब गौतम उन्हें ऋषि मुनियों की शरण में गए और दूर खड़े होकर प्रणाम स्तुति करने के उपरांत हाथ जोड़कर इस प्रकार करने लगे है ऋषि मुनि अब आप मुझ पर दया करके वह उपाय बताएं जिससे मेरा यह पाप नष्ट हो जाए हे नारद गौतम के इन करूं वचनों को सुनकर पूर्ण रिसीव मानियो के हृदय में दया का संचार हुआ तब वह इस प्रकार कहने लगे है गौतम तुम्हारी शिष्यों ने हमारी स्त्रियों का अत्यंत अनादर किया था फिर तुम्हारी पत्नी अहिल्या ने भी बहुत उपद्रव मचाया था इस कर्म का फल तुम्हें इस प्रकार भोगना पड़ा है हम तुम्हें यह बताते हैं कि शिवजी संपूर्ण पापों को नष्ट करने वाले हैं तुम सर्वप्रथम तीन दिन तक पृथ्वी पर भ्रमण करते हुए अपने पाप को उच्च स्वर से कहते हीरो तदुपरांत एक मास तक व्रत करके 100 बार ब्राह्मणों की परिक्रमा करो तब इस पाप से मुक्त हज सकोगे दूसरा उपाय यह है कि तुम इसी स्थान पर गंगा जी को प्रकट करके उनमें स्नान करो तथा एक करोड़पति पूजन करो तो तुम्हारी शुद्ध हो जाएगी हे नारद यह सुनकर गौतम ने उन मुनियों की 100 बार परिक्रमा की तदुपरांत हुए एक करोड़पति पूजन करके शिव जी के ध्यान में सालाना हो गए और तू गौतम के उसे तप को देखकर शिवजी अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए और गिरजा अपने पुत्र तथा गानों सहित प्रगट होकर उनमें से इस प्रकार कहने लगे है गौतम तुम हमें अपने प्राणों से भी अधिक प्रिय हो अब तुम्हारी जो भी इच्छा हो वह वर मांग लो यह सुनकर गौतम ने प्रणाम स्तुति करने के उपरांत या प्रार्थना की है प्रभु यदि आप मुझ पर प्रसन्न है तो मेरे पाप को दूर कर दीजिए

Brahma Ji said, O Narada, Gautam Rishi got his disciples to do farming near the pond. This news spread in the whole world. Then all the sages and saints, along with their wives and disciples, came from all over and started living near this place by making huts. In this way, a very big and great city was established around the pond. People suffering from hunger and thirst came there and felt happy. Due to the boon of Varun Devta, Gautam Kund had such an effect that no matter how much water is filled from it, it never used to fall short. O Narada, one day, being under the influence of the illusion of Lord Shiva, Gautam Rishi, filled with great pride, sent his disciples to bring water from the pond quickly. When Gautam's disciples reached the bank of the pond, at that time other wives of the sages also reached there standing on their heads. They said to Gautam's disciples that first we will fill water, then you can fill it later. On hearing this, Gautam's disciples returned to Ahalya without filling water and the wives of the sages who said this to them, beat them up. They did not let us fill water. Then Ahalya along with those disciples reached the pond and stood at home and made the children fill water in front of them and returned home. Seeing this condition, the wives of the sages became very angry and returned to their homes without taking water and started telling their husbands all the stories by crying and telling them true and false stories. Hearing this story, Brahma ji said, O Narada, women have this nature of lying. A woman should be considered more dangerous than a man. The direct proof of this is that even Lord Shiva and Halahal remain awake all the time, but Vishnu falls asleep after falling into the mouth of a woman. King Dasharatha was seen, he became subservient to women and threw out his son like Ramchandra from the house. It is said that what is that thing which cannot sink in the sea? What is that thing which cannot burn fire? What is that man who cannot be killed by death and what is that deed which a woman cannot do? O Narada, then after listening to those women, the sage became very angry and decided to harm Gautam. Then he got angry with this advice. They started worshipping Ganpati. After some time, being satisfied with their service, Ganpati appeared before them and said, "Munis, your desire is not good. It is not right for you to destroy yourself with your own hands." Hearing this, those munis unanimously said, "O Ganesh Ji, we all have decided to cause pain to Gautam. It is our prayer that you should definitely cause pain to Gautam." Then Ganesh Ji explained to them, "Munis, the one who has blessed Gautam Rishi so much will also protect him. Due to the grace of Lord Shiva, no harm will happen to Gautam, but due to going against the wish of Lord Shiva, all of you will suffer a lot." O Narada, saying this, Ganesh Ji disappeared. Then he took the form of a very weak cow and helped the people who were grazing Gautam's field. At that time, Gautam also reached near his field. When he saw the cow climbing into the field, he tried to get it out with the help of a straw, but on getting the touch of those three cows, the cow fell down on the earth as if someone had attacked it with a hammer. Gautam informed this news to his disciples. At that time all the sages and saints came to Gautam and giving him authority, they said to him, Gautam, after seeing you, your wife and your three types of penance, havan, dham, knowledge, cleverness, awakening art etc, you have killed a villager, if you stay here then no god or father will come to take his share. In this way, the wives of those sages also said a lot of misdeeds to Ahalya. Thereafter all of them together decided that from today no one should see Gautam's face. Then they started pelting stones at Gautam's wife and Gautam's disciples and drove them out of their place. O Narada, at that time Gautam requested those sages and saints in many ways, “It has been a great experience, we are leaving from here”. Then Gautam along with his disciples went from there and started living at a distance of a course. At that time Gautam thought that till the sin of cow slaughter is not forgiven, neither should we touch anyone nor should we do any work for god, father etc. If any man goes out by deceit, then he should cover his face with a cloth. He used to throw stones at them and at that time they would become very restless and start doing Rudranaag. In this way, when 15 days passed, Gautam went to the shelter of Rishi Munis and after standing at a distance and praying, with folded hands, he said, Rishi Muni, now please have mercy on me and tell me the way by which this sin of mine can be destroyed. O Narada, on hearing these words of Gautam, mercy filled the heart of the receiver and then he said, Gautam, your disciples had disrespected our women a lot, then your wife Ahalya also created a lot of ruckus, you had to suffer the result of this deed in this way. We are telling you that Shiv Ji is the destroyer of all sins. First of all, roam the earth for three days while saying your sins loudly, after that, observe fast for one month and circumambulate the Brahmins 100 times, then you will be able to go on Haj free from this sin. The second way is that you bring Ganga Ji to this place and take bath in it and worship a crorepati. Then your body will be purified, O Narada. On hearing this, Gautam circled around those sages 100 times and after that became a millionaire, by worshipping and getting absorbed in the meditation of Lord Shiva, and seeing the penance of Gautam, Lord Shiva became very pleased and sent him along with his son and cow.Appearing with the gods, they said to him, Gautam, you are dearer to us than our lives. Now you can ask for any boon you wish. On hearing this, Gautam, after paying his respects, prayed – Lord, if you are pleased with me, then remove my sins.
