श्री शिव महापुराण कथा आठवां खंड अध्याय 42

ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा हे नारद सभी क्षेत्रों में गौतमी गंगा अत्यंत पवित्र है इस प्रकार त्र्यंबक ज्योतिर्लिंग भी संपूर्ण मनोरथ को प्रदान करने वाला है यह सुनकर नारद जी बोले ही पिता गंगा जी जल रूप होकर कहां से प्रकट हुए तथा शिवजी का लिंग किस प्रकार प्रकट हुआ उनकी कैसी महिमा हुई तथा ब्राह्मणों का अहंकार किस प्रकार दूर हुआ यह सब वृतांत आप मुझे सुनने की और कृपा करें ब्रह्मा जी बोले हे पुत्र हम सब की प्रार्थना सुनकर गंगाजल रूप हो ब्रह्म सेल के भीतर उधर शाखा से निकलती हुई नदी रूप में बड़े विवेक से बहने लगी तथा गौतमी के नाम से संसार में प्रसिद्ध हुई जहां से गंगा निकली उसे स्थान का नाम गंगा द्वारा हुआ वही शिवजी बिल्डिंग रूप त्रांबक के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुए दादू प्रांत गौतम ने अपनी पत्नी अहिल्या तथा शिष्यों सहित गौतमी नदी में स्नान करके त्र्यंबक शिवलिंग का पूजन किया और शिव गंगा की बहुत ही स्तुति की परंतु जिस समय गौतम के शत्रु ऋषि मुनि उसे स्थान पर आए तो गंगा तथा शिव दोनों ही अंतर ध्यान हो गए उसे समय गौतम जी ने अत्यंत विनय करते हुए गंगा जी से यह प्रार्थना की आप इन लोगों के पापों को क्षमा कर दें परंतु तभी यह आकाशवाणी हुई है गौतम मूर्ख कामिनी चली सूट अशुद्ध तथा नास्तिक व्यक्ति भले ही पवित्र हो जाए परंतु जो व्यक्ति शिव भक्तों का शत्रु होता है उसके पाप कभी भी दूर नहीं होते यह सुनकर गौतम ने फिर बारंबार स्थिति की और कहा है माता-पिता आप इन लोगों के पाप को भी अवश्य दूर कर दीजिए हे नारद जब गौतम ने इस प्रकार पुणे प्रार्थना की उसे समय यह आकाशवाणी हुई है गौतम तुम हमारे परम भक्त हो आज तो हम तुम्हारे अधीन है तुम जो कह रहे हो उसे भी हम स्वीकार करेंगे अब इन ब्राह्मणों को अपने पापों की शांति का उपाय करना चाहिए जब एक 100 बार ब्रह्मगिरि की परिक्रमा करेंगे तभी अपने पापों से मुक्ति पा सकेंगे इस आकाशवाणी को सुनकर सभी ऋषि मुनि तथा गौतम प्रसन्न हुए तब उन मुनियों ने अहंकार एवं दोष से रहित होकर गौतम की बड़ी स्तुति की ओर ब्रह्मगिरि की परिक्रमा करके अपने पाप का प्रायश्चित किया उसे समय शिवजी तथा गंगा जी भी अपने स्थान पर पुनः प्रकट हो गई साधु प्राण सब ऋषि मुनि ने गंगा जी में स्नान करके शिवजी का पूजन किया तथा गौतम के चरणों पर गिर कर क्षमा याचना की उसे समय गौतम ने अत्यंत प्रसन्न होकर सबको अपने हृदय से लगा लिया तथा बहुत प्रकार से समझाते हुए उसकी लज्जा दूर की उसे समय विष्णु जी मैं तथा अन्य देवताओं ने भी उसे स्थान पर पहुंचकर गंगा में स्नान किया और शिवजी का पूजन किया हे नारद उसे स्थान पर कुशा व्रत गंगा द्वारा तथा कोर्ट तीर्थ नमक तीर्थ अत्यंत आनंद प्रदान करने वाले हैं रामचंद्र जी भी जब पंचवटी में पहुंचे थे तो वहां गंगा जी को देखकर उसी स्थान पर कुछ दिनों रहे थे उन्होंने देखने तथा स्मरण करने मात्र से ही प्रत्येक प्राणी पवित्र हो जाता है जो व्यक्ति गंगा में स्नान करता है वह मानव सब धर्म को कर सकता है तथा जो त्रांबक ज्योति लिंग का पूजन करता है उसे दोनों लोगों में अत्यंत आनंद प्राप्त होता है शिवजी का त्र्यंबक ज्योतिर्लिंग संपूर्ण पापों को दूर करने वाला है जो मनुष्य इस कथा को पढ़ना सुनता तथा दूसरों को सुनता है उसे भी सब प्रकार के आनंद प्राप्त होते हैं

Brahma Ji said, O Narad, Gautami Ganga is very sacred in all the regions, similarly, Tryambak Jyotirlinga also fulfils all wishes. On hearing this, Narad Ji said, father, from where did Ganga appear in the form of water, how did Shivji's Linga appear, how was his glory and how did the arrogance of Brahmins get destroyed, please bless me to listen to all this story. Brahma Ji said, O son, on hearing our prayers, Ganga became water and started flowing in the form of a river emerging from the branch inside the Brahma cell with great discretion and became famous in the world by the name of Gautami. The place from where Ganga emerged was named Ganga Dwara, the same Shivji building became famous by the name of Trimbak. Dadu province Gautam, along with his wife Ahalya and disciples, took bath in Gautami river and worshipped Tryambak Shivlinga and praised Shiv Ganga a lot, but when Gautam's enemy sage Muni came to that place, then both Ganga and Shiv went into deep meditation. At that time, Gautam Ji humbly prayed to Ganga Ji that she should forgive the sins of these people. But then this voice was heard from the sky that Gautam, a foolish woman has gone impure and an atheist person may become pure but the sins of a person who is an enemy of Shiv devotees never go away. Hearing this, Gautam again and again asked the situation and said, O Narada, parents, you must remove the sins of these people also. When Gautam prayed in this way, then this voice was heard from the sky that Gautam, you are our supreme devotee, today we are under your control, we will accept whatever you are saying. Now these Brahmins should find a way to pacify their sins. Only when they circumambulate Brahmagiri 100 times, they will be able to get freedom from their sins. Hearing this voice from the sky, all the sages and saints and Gautam became happy. Then those saints, being free from ego and faults, praised Gautam a lot and circumambulated Brahmagiri and atoned for their sins. At that time, Shivji and Gangaji also appeared again at their place. All the sages and saints bathed in Gangaji and worshipped Shivji and fell at Gautam's feet and begged for forgiveness. At that time, Gautam Being very pleased, he embraced everyone and by explaining in many ways, he removed his shame. At that time, Vishnu ji and other gods also reached that place, took bath in Ganga and worshipped Shiva. O Narada, at that place, Kusha fast by Ganga and pilgrimages like Korta Tirtha give immense pleasure. When Ramchandra ji also reached Panchvati, he saw Ganga ji there and stayed at that place for a few days. Every creature becomes pure by just seeing and remembering it. The person who takes bath in Ganga can perform all the religions and the one who worships Trimbak Jyoti Linga gets immense pleasure in both the worlds. The Tryambak Jyotirling of Shiva removes all sins. The person who reads and listens to this story and narrates it to others also gets all kinds of pleasure.
