श्री शिव महापुराण कथा दसवां खंड अध्याय 1

सूट जीने कहा ही शौक आदि ऋषियों शिवरात्रि व्रत का वृतांत सुनने के उपरांत नारद जी ने ब्रह्मा जी से कहा है पिता भगवान सदाशिव के जितने भी व्रत हो उसे आप मुझे बताने की कृपा करें यह सुनकर ब्रह्मा जी ने उत्तर दिया है पुत्र शिव जी के आश्रम के व्रत हैं उन सब बातों में निम्नलिखित 12 व्रत अत्यंत आवश्यक तथा प्रमुख है इन्हें यशपाल स्मृति में वर्णन किया गया है मनुष्य को चाहिए कि वह इन बातों को अवश्य धारण करें क्योंकि इन्हें किए बिना किसी कार्य की सिद्धि नहीं होती हे नारद व्रत इस प्रकार है दोनों अष्टमी दोनों एकादशी दोनों त्रयोदशी दोनों चतुर्दशी कथा महीने में जितने चंद्रमा पड़े यह सब मिलकर एक महीने में 12 व्रत होते हैं भगवान सदाशिव की आ गया है की अष्टमी के व्रत में केवल फलाहार करना चाहिए परंतु शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी को निर्जला व्रत कर रखना चाहिए कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी को भोजन किया जाना सकता है इसी प्रकार दोनों त्रयोदशी तथा कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्दशी में एक बार भोजन करने किया गया है परंतु शुक्ल पक्ष की चंद्र दासी में निर्जला व्रत धारण करना चाहिए सोमवार के व्रत में भी एक समय भोजन कर लेने की आज्ञा है इन सभी व्रत को शक्ति सहित भगवान सदा शिव का पूजन करना चाहिए इन व्रत में अपनी समर्थ अनुसार शिव भक्तों को भोजन करना चाहिए तथा शक्ति के अनुसार दान देना चाहिए हे नारद जो मनुष्य इन 12 व्रत में से एक व्रत भी नहीं करता उसे महापति समझना चाहिए जो मनुष्य शिवजी के सभी व्रत को करता है उसे परम पवित्र समझना चाहिए यदि कोई मनुष्य 12 व्रत रखें मैं असमर्थ होने के कारण केवल एक ही व्रत धारण करता है तो वह भी शुभ है इन दोनों प्रकार के व्रत रखने वालों पर भगवान सदाशिव सदैव अपनी कृपा बनाए रखते हैं हे नारद कर वस्तु मुक्ति प्रदान करने वाले हैं उनमें इस प्रकार जानना चाहिए शिवजी का पूजन दूसरा शिवजी का ताप तीसरा शिव जी का व्रत कथा कहां से में मृत्यु के चारों बातें शिवजी को अत्यंत प्रिय तथा संसार में अत्यंत सुख प्रदान करने वाली है इन सब बातों में शिवजी का व्रत अत्यंत श्रेष्ठ कहा गया है शिवरात्रि के व्रत को सभी वर्ण सभी आश्रम तथा सभी आयु के स्त्री पुरुष धारण कर सकते हैं जो लोग शिवरात्रि के व्रत को रखते हैं उसे शिवलोक की प्राप्ति होती है हे नारद भगवान सदाशिव की महिमा के समान ही शिवरात्रि व्रत की महिमा में अनंत है कोई मनुष्य कैसा भी पापी क्यों ना हो यदि वह शिवरात्रि का व्रत कर लेता है तो उसके संपूर्ण पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं संसार में जितने भी धर्म तप को आदि है उसमें कोई भी इस व्रत के समान नहीं है शिवरात्रि का व्रत शिव जी को अपने प्राणों के समान अत्यंत प्रिय है शिवरात्रि के व्रत के द्वारा यह दत्त नामक ब्राह्मण के पुत्र गुण निधि ने सुमति नामक स्त्री के तथा विकास आदि के श्रेष्ठ गति को प्राप्त किया है सभी देवता एवं भूमि आदि इस व्रत को धारण करते हैं तथा अभिलाषित फल प्राप्त करते हैं हे नारद शिवरात्रि के व्रत को सर्वपरी जानना चाहिए यद्यपि प्रत्येक महीने की कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्दशी को यह व्रत होता है परंतु मांग मास में इस व्रत को विशेष रूप से आवश्यक कहा गया है इसी प्रकार फागुन मास की चतुर्दशी को यह व्रत अत्यंत आवश्यक कहा गया है अर्धरात्रि तक जो चतुर्दशी की तिथि रही है उसी को शिव व्रत के लिए उपयुक्त कहा गया है यदि शिवरात्रि शिव व्रत को धारण करके उसी दिन पारण कर तो उसे अधिक शुभ अन्य कुछ नहीं है यदि चंद्रमा अस्त हो जाए तो प्राण नहीं होता शिवरात्रि व्रत का प्राण बहुत सोच विचार करने के उपरांत करना चाहिए जिस रात्रि को व्रत किया जाए उसके चारों बार भगवान सदाशिव का चार बार पूजन किया जाना रात्रि के समय प्राण न करना तथा चंद्रग्रस्त के संगम को भी त्याग देना उचित है चंद्रमा के सहयोग बिना यदि दिन में प्राण हो सके तो ऐसा सहयोग बड़े भाग्य से ही प्राप्त होती है यदि चतुर्दशी तिथि प्राण के लिए प्रार्थना हो सके तो आवश्यक अमावस्या में ही प्रण करना चाहिए हे नारद इस प्रकार शिवरात्रि का व्रत प्रत्येक वर्ष में एक बार प्रमुख रूप से होता है इस व्रत को करने से ब्रह्म हत्या आदि के पाप दूर हो जाते हैं अन्य कोई भी परत इस बारात के समान नहीं है जो मनुष्य इस व्रत को नहीं करता उसे अनेक प्रकार के कष्ट उठाने पड़ते हैं ऐसे मनुष्य का कोई भी कार्य पूरा नहीं होता वह संसार में रहकर रोगों में ग्रस्त रहता है तथा मृत्यु के उपरांत भी मुक्ति प्राप्त नहीं करता यदि यह व्रत कभी अनजान में भी हो जाए तो व्रत करने वालों को श्रेष्ठ गति प्राप्त होती है यदि कोई पापी मनुष्य इस व्रत को धारण करता है तो उसे दोनों लोग में प्रसन्नता प्राप्त होती है जो मनुष्य निश्चय पूर्वक इस व्रत को धारण करता है उसे देखकर यमराज भी भयभीत होने लगते हैं ऐसे मनुष्य पर शिवजी सदैव प्रसन्न रहते हैं तथा उसे पर अत्यंत कृपा करके लोग लोक में सभी पदार्थ तथा परलोक में मुक्ति प्रदान करते हैं शिवरात्रि व्रत धारी का संपूर्ण कल भी मुक्त हो जाती है तथा देवता बुनियादी सभी लोग उसकी प्रशंसा करते हैं हे नारद इस प्रकार मैंने तुमसे शिवरात्रि व्रत की महिमा का वर्णन किया आप चारों पहर की पूजा विधि का वर्णन सुनो

After listening to the story of Shivratri fast of sages like Suit Jeene, Shauk etc., Narad ji said to Brahma ji, father, please tell me about all the fasts of Lord Sadashiv. On hearing this, Brahma ji replied, son, there are fasts of Shiv Ji's ashram, among all of them, the following 12 fasts are very important and important. They have been described in Yashpal Smriti. Man must observe these things because without doing them, no work is accomplished. Narad fasts are as follows, both Ashtami, both Ekadashi, both Trayodashi, both Chaturdashi, the number of moons in a month, all together there are 12 fasts in a month. It is said of Lord Sadashiv that on Ashtami fast, only fruits should be eaten, but on Shukla Paksha Ekadashi, Nirjala fast should be observed. Food can be eaten on Krishna Paksha Ekadashi. Similarly, food is taken once on both Trayodashi and Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi, but on Shukla Paksha Chandra Dasi, Nirjala fast should be observed. On Monday fast It is also permitted to take food only once a day. All these fasts should be observed with the worship of Lord Sadashiv. In these fasts, Shiva devotees should eat food according to their capability and give donations according to their capability. O Narada, the person who does not observe even one of these 12 fasts should be considered a great man. The person who observes all the fasts of Lord Shiva should be considered extremely pure. If a person observes only one fast due to his inability to observe 12 fasts, that too is auspicious. Lord Sadashiv always showers his blessings on those who observe both types of fasts. O Narada, the one who provides salvation should be known in this way. The worship of Lord Shiva, second is the suffering of Lord Shiva, third is the story of the fast of Lord Shiva. The four things of death are very dear to Lord Shiva and provide immense happiness in this world. Among all these things, the fast of Lord Shiva is said to be the best. The fast of Shivaratri can be observed by men and women of all castes, all ashramas and all ages. Those who observe the fast of Shivaratri attain Shivalok. O Narada, the glory of Shivaratri fast is infinite like the glory of Lord Sadashiv. What kind of a person is he? No matter how sinful he is, if he observes the fast of Shivratri, all his sins are destroyed. Of all the religions and penances in the world, none is as good as this fast. The fast of Shivratri is as dear to Lord Shiva as his life. Through the fast of Shivratri, the son of a Brahmin named Dutt, Gun Nidhi, attained the best position in the marriage of a woman named Sumati and development etc. All the gods and the earth observe this fast and get the desired fruits. O Narada, the fast of Shivratri should be considered the most important. Although this fast is observed on the Chaturdashi of the Krishna Paksha of every month, but this fast is said to be especially necessary in the month of Mang. Similarly, this fast is said to be very necessary on the Chaturdashi of the month of Phalgun. The Chaturdashi date which is till midnight is said to be suitable for the Shiv fast. If the Shivratri fast is observed and one breaks it on the same day, then it is more auspicious than this. If the moon sets, then the fast is not observed. The fast of Shivratri should be observed after much deliberation. Lord Sadashiv is worshipped four times on the four days of the night on which the fast is observed. It is advisable to not perform worship at night and also to avoid the confluence of the moon. If it is possible to perform worship during the day without the support of the moon, then such support is obtained only by great fortune. If there is a prayer for worship on the Chaturdashi date, then it should be done on the Amavasya. O Narada, in this way, the fast of Shivratri is observed once in every year. By observing this fast, the sins of Brahmahatya etc. are removed. No other fast is like this. The person who does not observe this fast has to bear many types of troubles. No work of such a person is completed. He remains afflicted with diseases while living in this world and does not get salvation even after death. If this fast is observed unknowingly, then the fasting people get the best destination. If a sinful person observes this fast, then he gets happiness in both the worlds. The person who observes this fast with determination, even Yamraj starts getting scared on seeing him. Shivji is always pleased with such a person and by showing great mercy on him, people provide him all the material things in this world and salvation in the next world. The entire future of the person observing Shivratri fast is fulfilled. Also gets liberated and all the people including the gods praise it. O Narada, in this way I have described the glory of Shivratri fast to you. Listen to the description of the method of worship of all the four times.
