शिव महापुराण कथा दसवां खंड अध्याय 14

ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा हे पुत्र आप माय एकादशी व्रत का महत्व कहता हूं एकादशी तिथि सब तिथियां में श्रेष्ठ तथा उत्तम है शिवजी को दोनों पक्षों की एकादशी प्रिया है शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी में पत्र जाल सहित होकर व्रत धारण करना चाहिए उसकी विधि यह है कि प्रातः काल उठकर नियम पूर्वक स्नान तथा शिव जी का पूजन करें पूरा दिन शिवजी के भजन कीर्तन में बताएं संध्या के समय पुणे स्थान करें तथा शिवजी का पूजन करें उन्हें प्रसन्न करें शिवजी को प्रसन्नता प्रदान करने के हेतु गाल बजाए तथा आरती उतारे हे नारद कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी में संध्या समय भोजन करना तथा शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी में निर्जला रहना उचित है परंतु यदि उन्हें दोनों की भक्तों में निर्जला व्रत धारण किया जाए तो उसका फल और अधिक शुभ होता है और तू इसे कभी नहीं त्यागना चाहिए एकादशी का व्रत रखने वाल मनुष्य संसार में संपूर्ण भोगों को भोगकर अंत में शिवपुरी को प्राप्त करता है इस संबंध में मैं तुम्हें एक कथा कहता हूं उसे ध्यानपूर्वक सुनो हे नारद सूर्यवंशी राजा माता ने इस व्रत को किया था सहयोग वास एक बार अयोध्या में बड़ा अकाल पड़ा था पत्र उत्पन्न न होने के कारण प्रजातियां व्याकुल हुई तभी सभी प्रजाजन एकत्रित होकर राजा की समीप पहुंचे और हाथ जोड़कर इस प्रकार प्रार्थना करने लगे है पृथ्वी पति ऐसा कौन सा पाप हुआ है जिसके कारण अकाल पड़ा है और हम लोग को भारी कष्ट भोगना पड़ रहा है है महाराज हम लोग भूख से मारे जा रहे हैं आज तो आपके शरणागत है आप हमारी रक्षा कीजिए और कोई ऐसा श्रेष्ठ उपाय बताएं इससे हम सब लोग का कष्ट दूर हो जाए हे नारद प्रजा जानू के मुख से क्या वचन सुनकर राजा मानता ने अत्यंत अर्जित हो ब्राह्मणों को बुलाया और उसका सम्मान करते हुए हाथ जोड़कर यह पूछा यह महानुभावों आप मुझे यह बताने की कृपा करें कि मेरे देश में वर्षा क्यों नहीं हो रही है इसके साथ ही आपको ऐसा उपाय भी बताएं जिसके करने से वर्षा होकर सब लोगों को आनंद प्राप्त हो राजा की प्रार्थना सुनकर सब ब्राह्मणों ने विचार कर उत्तर दिया है राजन वर्षा न होने का कोई कारण हमें याद नहीं होता परंतु वर्षा होने के लिए हम तुम्हें उपाय बताते हैं इतना कहकर ब्राह्मणों ने वर्ष होने के आने के उपाय बताएं परंतु उन्होंने करने पर भी किसी प्रकार वर्षा नहीं हुआ यह देखकर राजा अत्यंत निराशा तथा चिंतित हो और राजधानी त्याग वन को चल दिया वहां लोग मास्क नामक एक तपस्वी रहते थे वह तपस्वी बड़े आत्मदर्शी ज्ञानी तथा शिव जी के भक्त थे राजा ने उन्हें सिद्ध जानकर बहुत प्रकार से स्तुति प्रशंसा की फिर हाथ जोड़कर इस प्रकार कहा यह सर्वत्र प्रभु अयोध्या में वर्षा न होने के कारण संपूर्ण प्रजातंत्र दुखी हो अब मैं व्याकुल होकर अपनी राजधानी त्याग यह वैन में चला आया हूं सौभाग्य से मुझे आपके चरणों के दर्शन प्राप्त हुए हैं आप कृपा करके कोई ऐसी युक्ति बताएं जिससे वर्षा हो है नारद राजा की प्रार्थना सुनकर लोमस ऋषि ने उत्तर दिया है राजन भगवान सदाशिव की कृपा से मैं तुम्हें वर्षा होने का एक सरल उपाय बतलाता हूं तुम्हें उचित है कि तुम अपनी संपूर्ण प्रजा सहित एकादशी का व्रत धारण करो तथा भगवान सदाशिव का पूजन करो इस व्रत में शिव जी का पूजन करने के पश्चात ही भोजन करना चाहिए ऐसा करने से तुम्हारा राज में अवश्य वर्षा होगी लोमस मनु ने यह वचन सुनकर राजा अत्यंत प्रसन्न हो अपनी राजधानी को लौटाए फिर उन्होंने अपनी प्रजा सहित एकादशी व्रत धारण किया इसके प्रभाव से खूब वर्षा हुई और संपूर्ण प्रजाति दुख दूर हो गया हे नारद इस व्रत के करने से राजा मोच राजा जनक तथा राज का सागर के संपूर्ण मनोकामनाओं को प्राप्त किया था रामचंद्र जी ने भी एकादशी का व्रत धारण कर सफलता प्राप्त की थी अब मैं तुम्हें रामचंद्र जी की कथा सुनाता हूं राजा दशरथ के पुत्र रामचंद्र जी बड़े प्रतापी थे भाग्य वर्ष में वनवास प्राप्त हुआ वहां लंका का राजा रावण उसकी पत्नी सीता को हर ले गया तब रामचंद्र जी सीता का पता लगाते हुए पंपापुर में जा पहुंचे वहां हनुमान से भेंट हुई उसकी सहायता से हुए सी एकत्रित और समुद्र के तट पर पहुंचे परंतु जब उन्होंने यह देखा कि समुद्र को पर करना अत्यंत कठिन है तो वह उपाय की खोज में इधर-उधर ब्राह्मण करने लगे योग वर्ष एक स्थान पर उन्हें लोमस ऋषि तपस्या करते हुए दिखाई दिए तब उन्होंने ऋषि के स्वामी पहुंचकर सब वृतांत का सुनाया और यह प्रार्थना की कि आप मुझे कोई उपाय बताएं इसके आश्रय से मैं सी सहित लंका पुरी में पहुंचकर रावण का संघार कर सकूं हे नारद रामचंद्र जी की प्रार्थना सुनकर लोमश ऋषि ने यह उत्तर दिया है राम प्रथम तो तुम विष्णु जी के अवतार हो दूसरे शिव जी के परम भक्त हुए सभी कार्य सिद्ध कर देंगे जो भी प्राणी मनुष्य शरीर धारण करता है उसे कोई ना कोई कष्ट हवा से उठाना पड़ता है इसलिए तुम्हें या दुख हुआ है क्योंकि तुम मनुष्य का शरीर धारण कर प्रगति हुई हो अब तुम्हें उचित है कि तुम एकादशी का व्रत करो तथा शिवजी का पूजन करके कुछ दिन फलाहार करो शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी में निर्जला व्रत करने तथा शिव गिरजा का देहांत करने से तुम्हें सिद्ध प्राप्त होगी वेद और पुराणों का कथन है की एकादशी के समान फल दायक कोई दूसरा व्रत नहीं है हे नारद लोमस ऋषि की शिक्षा अनुसार रामचंद्र जी ने एकादशी व्रत धारण किया उसे रात के प्रभाव से उन्हें समुद्र पर सेतु बंध तथा शिवलिंग की स्थापना कर शिवजी को प्रसन्न किया तब प्रांत हुए अपनी सुना सहित लंका में जा पहुंचे फिर उन्हें रावण को वश सहित मार डाला एकादशी का व्रत ऐसा ही फल देने वाला है यह व्रत विष्णु जी तथा शिवजी दोनों का कहा गया है इस व्रत को करने से शिवजी तथा विष्णु जी दोनों ही प्रसन्न होते हैं इस व्रत का महत्व सुनने से भी दोनों लोगों में आनंद की प्राप्ति होती है

Brahma Ji said, O son, I am telling you the importance of Ekadashi fast. Ekadashi date is the best and most auspicious among all the dates. Shiva loves Ekadashi of both sides. On Shukla Paksha Ekadashi, one should observe fast with a leaf and a net. Its method is to get up in the morning, take a bath as per the rules and worship Shiva. Spend the whole day singing bhajans and kirtans of Shiva. In the evening, go to Pune and worship Shiva and please him. To please Shiva, clap your hands and perform aarti. O Narada, it is appropriate to eat food during the evening on Krishna Paksha Ekadashi and to remain without water on Shukla Paksha Ekadashi. But if one observes a waterless fast on both the days, then its result is more auspicious and you should never abandon it. A person who observes Ekadashi fast, after enjoying all the pleasures of the world, finally attains Shivapuri. In this regard, I am telling you a story. Listen to it carefully. O Narada, the Suryavanshi king and mother had observed this fast. Once there was a big famine in Ayodhya due to which leaves were not produced. Due to this the people got worried, then all the people gathered near the king and with folded hands started praying like this, O Lord of the earth, what sin has been committed due to which there is famine and we are suffering a lot, O Maharaj, we are dying of hunger, today we are at your refuge, please protect us and tell us a good solution, by which all our sufferings will end. O Narada, on hearing these words from the mouth of the people, king Manta called the Brahmins with great enthusiasm and with folded hands asked him, O great people, please tell me why it is not raining in my country, along with this also tell me such a solution, by doing which it rains and all the people get happiness. Hearing the prayer of the king, all the Brahmins thought and replied, O King, we do not remember any reason for the lack of rain, but we will tell you a solution for the rain to come, saying this, the Brahmins told the ways to bring the rain, but even after doing them, there was no rain. Seeing this, the king became very disappointed and worried and leaving the capital went to the forest, there lived an ascetic named Mask. That ascetic was very He was a self-realized wise man and a devotee of Lord Shiva. The king considered him a Siddha and praised him in many ways. Then with folded hands he said, “O Lord, due to lack of rain in Ayodhya, the entire democracy is unhappy. Now I am distraught and have left my capital and have come to Van. Fortunately, I have got the darshan of your feet. Please tell me a way by which it rains.” On hearing the prayer of the king, the sage Lomas replied, “O King, by the grace of Lord Sadashiv, I am telling you a simple way to bring rain. It is appropriate for you to observe the Ekadashi fast along with your entire subjects and worship Lord Sadashiv. In this fast, one should eat food only after worshipping Lord Shiva. By doing this, it will surely rain in your kingdom.” On hearing these words, the king was very pleased. Lomas Manu returned to his capital. Then he observed the Ekadashi fast along with his subjects. Due to its effect, there was a lot of rain and the entire race’s sorrow was removed. O Narada, by observing this fast, all the wishes of King Moch, King Janak and King Ka Sagar were fulfilled. Lord Ram also observed Ekadashi. By observing the fast of Ramachandra, he achieved success. Now I will tell you the story of Ramchandra. King Dasharath's son Ramchandra was very powerful. In the year 1818, he was exiled. There, the king of Lanka, Ravana abducted his wife, Sita. Then Ramchandra went to Pampapur in search of Sita. There, he met Hanuman. With his help, he collected the sea and reached the seashore. But when he saw that it was very difficult to cross the sea, he started searching for a solution. At one place, he saw Lomas Rishi doing penance. Then he went to the sage's master and narrated the entire incident to him and prayed that he should tell him a solution so that with its help, he could reach Lanka along with the sea and kill Ravana. O Narada, on hearing Ramchandra's prayer, Lomash Rishi gave this answer. Ram, first of all, you are the incarnation of Vishnu Ji. Secondly, you are the supreme devotee of Shiva. You will accomplish all the tasks. Whichever creature takes human form has to bear some trouble or the other from the sea. That is why you have suffered because you have made progress by taking human form. Now it is appropriate for you to observe Ekadashi fast and worship Lord Shiva and eat fruits for a few days. By observing Nirjala fast on Shukla Paksh Ekadashi and by worshipping Lord Shiva, you will attain Siddhi. Vedas and Puranas say that there is no other fast as fruitful as Ekadashi. O Narada, according to the teachings of Lomas Rishi, Ramchandra Ji observed Ekadashi fast. By the effect of the night, he built a bridge on the sea and established a Shivling and pleased Lord Shiva. Then he went to Lanka with his army and killed Ravana. Ekadashi fast gives such results. This fast is said to be for both Vishnu Ji and Shiva Ji. By observing this fast, both Shiva Ji and Vishnu Ji become happy. Even by hearing the importance of this fast, both get bliss.
