श्री शिव महापुराण कथा दसवां खंड अध्याय 18

ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा हे नारद नैषध देश के राजा नल और दमयंती के संबंध में पहले भी कहा जा चुका है हुए दोनों राजा रानी शिवजी के परम भक्त थे उसके एक बालक उत्पन्न हुआ उसका नाम इंद्रसेन था इंद्रसेन भी शिवजी का परम भक्त था इंद्रसेन के घर चित्र नाम के एक बालक का जन्म हुआ चित्र चंद्रमा के समान सुंदर संपूर्ण विधाओं तथा कलाओं में प्रवीण एवं मापने पिता के समान ही शिवजी का परम भक्त था राजा चित्र वर्मा ने उसे सब प्रकार से योग देखकर अपनी पुत्री सीमावंती का विवाह उसके साथ कर दिया विवाह के उपरांत चित्र उसे समय तक अपने ससुर के घर में ही रहा एक दिन वह अपने सेवा के साथ नाव पर चढ़कर यमुना नदी में जलविहार कर रहा था कि अचानक ही वह नाव पानी में डूब गई इस समय दोनों किनारो पर खड़े हुए लोग हा कर आकर करने लगे हे नारद जब राजा चित्र वर्मा ने यह समाचार सुना तो वह अत्यंत व्याकुल हो नदी के तट पर जा पहुंचा और उच्च स्वर से रूद्र करने लगा रानी भी मुर्जित होकर पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ी जिस समय सीमा बंटी को अपने पति के डूबने का समाचार मिला उसे समय विवाह निकलता के कारण मलित हो पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ी राजा के मंत्री सभा सदस्य तथा राजा में से ऐसा कोई भी व्यक्ति न थ जो इस समाचार को प्रकार अत्यंत व्याकुल न हुआ हो जब राजा चंद्रसेन के पास यह समाचार पहुंचा तो वह भी अपनी पत्नी सहित शोक समुद्र में डूब गई सीमावंती ने पहले तो पति के साथ सती हो जाने की इच्छा प्रकट की परंतु जब पिता ने ऐसा करने से मना किया तब वहां वेदव धर्म में स्थित रहकर भगवान सदाशिव का पूजन करती हुई अपना जीव जीवन व्यतीत करने लगी पति की मृत्यु को जाने पर भी उसे सोमवार का व्रत करना नहीं छोड़ा जब सोमवार का दिन आया तो उसे मैथिली की आज्ञा अनुसार दिन भर निर्जल व्रत रखकर प्रदोष काल में शिव गिरिजा का पूजन किया तथा अत्यंत प्रेम पूर्वक अत्यंत उत्साह मनाया इस प्रकार विभव अवस्था में उसे 3 वर्ष का समय व्यतीत हो गया इधर तो यह हाल था राजा चित्र के पिता राजा इंद्रसेन के ऊपर शत्रुओं ने चढ़ाई कर दी तथा उसके संपूर्ण राजपथ छीनकर उसे रानी सहित गांधी गिरी में डाल दिया परंतु सीमावंती के व्रत के प्रभाव से जल में डूबे हुए राजा चित्रा ने बहुत आनंद प्राप्त किया हुआ जमुना से जीवित निकल आया भगवान सदा शिव की ऐसी कृपा देखकर उसके ससुर आदि को जो प्रसन्नता हुई उसके वर्णन नहीं किया जा सकता है

Brahma Ji said, O Narada, it has already been told about King Nal and Damyanti of Naishadha country. Both the king and queen were great devotees of Lord Shiva. A child was born to them. His name was Indrasen. Indrasen was also a great devotee of Lord Shiva. A child named Chitra was born in Indrasen's house. Chitra was as beautiful as the moon, proficient in all the arts and crafts and was a great devotee of Lord Shiva like his father. King Chitra Varma, seeing him suitable in all respects, got his daughter Seema Vanti married to him. After marriage, Chitra stayed in his father-in-law's house for some time. One day, he was taking a boat ride in the Yamuna river with his servants, when suddenly the boat sank in the water. At this time, people standing on both the banks started waving and shouting. O Narada, when King Chitra Varma heard this news, he became very anxious, reached the river bank and started chanting Rudra in a loud voice. The queen also fell on the ground in a trembling state. When Seema Vanti got the news of her husband drowning, she fell on the ground due to the time of marriage passing by. There was no person among the king's ministers, members of the court and the king who was not very upset on hearing this news. When this news reached King Chandrasen, he too drowned in the sea of ​​grief along with his wife. At first, Seemawanti expressed her desire to commit sati with her husband, but when her father refused to do so, she started living her life by worshipping Lord Sadashiv, living in the Vedic religion. Even after knowing about her husband's death, she did not stop fasting on Mondays. When Monday came, she kept a waterless fast throughout the day as per Maithili's instructions. She worshipped Lord Shiva during Pradosh period and celebrated with great enthusiasm and love. In this way, she spent 3 years in a trance-like state. Here, the situation was such that the enemies attacked King Chitra's father, King Indrasen, and snatched away his entire royal palace and threw him along with the queen into Gandhi Giri. But due to the effect of Seemawanti's fast, King Chitra, who was drowned in the water, felt very happy and came out of the Yamuna alive. Seeing such grace of Lord Sadashiv, her father-in-law and others were very happy. it cannot be described what happened
