शिव महापुराण कथा दसवां खंड अध्याय 2

ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा हे नारद प्रातः काल उठकर नित्य कर्म करने के उपरांत सर्वप्रथम प्रसन्नता पूर्वक शिव मंदिर में जाकर भगवान सदाशिव की स्तुति करनी चाहिए दादू प्राण व्रत धारण करने वाले को पवित्रता पूर्वक अपने हाथ में पानी लेकर किया संकल्प करना चाहिए कि हे भगवान सदाशिव मैं आपका व्रत करता रहूंगा उसमें किसी प्रकार का विघ्न न पड़े इस प्रकार संकल्प करने की प्रात व्रत धारी को चाहिए कि वह पूजन की संपूर्ण सामग्री को एकत्रित कर उसे स्थान पर दक्षिण तथा पश्चिम की ओर आसान बेचकर पूजन की सामग्री वहां रखें जहां कोई प्रसिद्ध शिवलिंग स्थापित हो इसके उपरांत व्रत धारी को उचित है कि वह समर्थ अनुसार श्रेष्ठ वस्त्र को पहन कर आसन पर बैठे और तीन बार आज मनी करने के उपरांत शिव जी का पूजन प्रारंभ करें नित्यागन सहित स्थिति में पवित्र होकर शिवजी के मित्रों सहित आर्थिक पूजन करना श्रेष्ठ कहा गया है हे नारद व्रतधारी को उचित है कि शिवरात्रि के महानता को यह तो स्वयं पढ़े अथवा किसी अन्य के द्वारा श्रवण करें कथा करने वाले की अनेक प्रकार की सेवा पूजा करना आवश्यक है शिवजी की श्रेष्ठ वस्तुओं का भोग लगाने को प्रात चारों पहाड़ में संकल्प करने के शिवलिंग का पूजन करना श्रेष्ठ कहा गया है शिवरात्रि को रात भर जागरण करके बड़ा उत्सव मनाना चाहिए प्रातः काल होने पर पुनः स्नान करके शिवजी का पूजन करना श्रेष्ठ कहा गया है प्रातः काल की स्तुति करने के उपरांत ब्रद्धारी को भगवान सदाशिव की प्रति या विनय करनी चाहिए की है प्रभु मैं श्रद्धा पूर्वक आपके व्रत में अपना मन लगाया है और तू आप मुझे अपना सेवक जानकर प्रसन्न हो गया तथा मेरे संपूर्ण मनोरथ को पूरा करें इतना कह कर शिवजी के ऊपर पुष्पांजलि होनी चाहिए इस प्रकार व्रत की क्रियाएं समाप्त हो जाने के पश्चात प्रसन्नता पूर्वक ब्राह्मणों को दान देना चाहिए तथा अपनी शक्ति के अनुसार शिव भक्तों ब्राह्मणों तथा यह क्यों को श्रेष्ठ भोजन दान आदि द्वारा प्रसन्न करना चाहिए हे नारद अब मैं चारों पहाड़ में पूजन की विधि का विस्तार पूर्वक वर्णन करता हूं संध्या के समय सर्वप्रथम संख्या आदि संपूर्ण नित्य कर्मों से निश्चित होकर पहले पहाड़ में इस प्रकार पूजन करें सर्वप्रथम संपूर्ण सामग्री एक पत्रकार के शिव जी के दोनों लिंगों अर्थात आर्थिक तथा शिवलिंग में से जो भी उसे स्थान पर हो वह पंचामृत द्वारा अलग-अलग मंत्र पढ़ते हुए पूजन करें इसके उपरांत 108 मंत्र पढ़कर शिवजी को जलधारा से स्नान कारण फिर मंत्र पढ़ना हुआ संपूर्ण सामग्री द्वारा शिवजी का पूजन करें अपने गुरुद्वारा दिए गए मंत्र से शिवजी का पूजन किया जाए या पांच अक्षरी मंत्र से शिवजी का पूजन किया जाए अथवा केवल शिवजी का नाम लेकर ही पूजन करना उचित है चंदन अस्त्र काले तिल कमल पुष्प कनेर के पुष्प आदि सभी पूजन के श्रेष्ठ वस्तुओं को शिव जी के 88 नाम लेकर चढ़ाना चाहिए उत्तम सुगंधित धूप देने के उपरांत आरती करनी चाहिए तथा श्रेष्ठ पकवान चढ़कर बेल का आदर देना चाहिए इस प्रकार पूजन करने के उपरांत दंडवत करते हुए शिवजी का ध्यान करना चाहिए यदि पूजन करने वाला किसी अन्य देवता का भक्त हो तो उसे उचित है कि वह पांच अक्षरी मंत्र द्वारा शिवजी का जाप करें शिव जी के सम्मुख गोमूत्र दिखाकर जल में बैठकर तर्पण करें तत्पश्चात पंच ब्राह्मण को भोजन करने का संकल्प करें यदि इतनी समर्थ ना हो तो केवल एक ही ब्राह्मण को भोजन करने का संकल्प करें इस प्रकार जब तक पहला पहर व्यक्तित्व ना हो जाए तब तक विधि प्रकार से उत्सव मनाता रहे हे नारद दूसरा पहाड़ आरंभ होने पर भी इस प्रकार शिवजी का पूजन करें परंतु इस पूजन की विधि में इतना अधिक कहा गया है कि जो का लोगो तथा कमल के पुष्प पहले पहाड़ से डूबने होने चाहिए तथा गीत शहर सहित दूध का निर्माता लगाकर बीच पूर्व का अर्थ देना चाहिए इसी प्रकार प्रत्येक स्थान पर शिव जी के नाम का जब भी पहले पहाड़ से दुगना कर देना चाहिए हे नारद तीसरे पहर की पूजा भी इस प्रकार करनी चाहिए परंतु उसमें इतना अधिक कहा गया है कि गेहूं का लोगो तथा मदार के फूल इस पूजा में होने उचित है अनेक प्रकार के धूप दीप में व्यक्ति के लिए पूजा नानक प्रकार के सांग आधार के लिए पक्का अनार तथा कपूर की आरती इन सबको पहले पहाड़ से दो ना करना चाहिए तथा शिव जी के मंत्र का जब भी पूर्व की अपेक्षा दोगुना करना उचित है हे नारद चौथे पहर की पूजा में इतनी अधिक और कहा है कि मुंह उड़ा तथा पियूं अर्थात का कोई का लाहौर सात प्रकार के संकुल तथा अन्य से बने हुए मिष्ठानों का निर्माता यात्रा उड़द का निवृत्ति बनाकर भोग लगाना चाहिए अनेक प्रकार के फलों तक अथवा केले के फल का आदर देना उचित है शिव जी के मंत्र का पहले से धुंआ जाप करके बहुत उत्सव मनाना चाहिए हे नारद चारों पहाड़ की पूजा में शिव जी के ऊपर असंख्य दिलाओ पत्र को चढ़ाना शुभ कहा गया है क्योंकि मिलाओ पत्र शिवजी पद्यांश प्रिया है बहुत से मनुष्यों को एकत्रित कर चारों पहाड़ नृत्य गाना आदि का उत्सव करना चाहिए इस प्रकार रात्रि भर जागरण करते हुए शिवाजी का ध्यान धारणा सर्वपरी कहा गया है अन्य किसी भी प्रकार का कोई भी संकल्प मन में लाना उचित नहीं है शिवरात्रि का महत्व सुनते हुए रात्रि को प्रसन्नता पूर्वक व्यक्तित्व करना चाहिए व्रत धारी को उचित है कि चारों पहर एक ही आसान पर बैठे तथा लोग रहित होकर यथाशक्ति धन खर्च सूर्योदय होने पर व्रत ब्राह्मणों को दंडवत करता हुआ आपने आसान से बैठे अपने मन में अत्यंत प्रसन्नता को अनेक प्रकार के उपहार को एकत्रित कर शुद्ध जल से भगवान सदाशिव का अभिषेक करना चाहिए फिर जितने ब्राह्मणों को भोजन करने का संकल्प किया हो उसकी अतिरिक्त और भी जितने हो सके उतने ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कारण साथ ही भोजन करते समय और जो भी लोग आ जावे उन सब लोग को भोजन करवा हे नारद जिन कार्यों को मैंने तुम्हें बताया है वह सब धनवानो के करने योग्य हैं परंतु जो निधन है वह यदि उपयुक्त सामग्री से पूजन ना कर सके तो उसे कोई दोस्त नहीं होता इस प्रकार चारों प्रकार पहाड़ तक पूजन करने के उपरांत प्रातः काल स्नान करके शिव फिर पूजन करें और ब्राह्मणों से आशीर्वाद लेकर समस्त देवताओं सहित शिव जी का विसर्जन करें जब इन कार्यों से निर्मित हो जाए तब ब्राह्मणों से आज्ञा प्राप्त कर अपने परिवार सहित भोजन करें हे नारद मैं विष्णु जी से शिवरात्रि व्रत की जो विधि सुनी थी वह तुम तुम्हें सुनाई है

Brahma Ji said, O Narada, after getting up in the morning and doing daily chores, first of all you should happily go to the Shiv temple and praise Lord Sadashiv. Dadu, the person observing the fast should take water in his hand with purity and take a pledge that O Lord Sadashiv, I will keep your fast, there should not be any kind of hindrance in it. In this way, the person observing the fast should collect all the worship material and place it on a seat facing south and west, and keep the worship material where a famous Shivling is installed. After this, it is appropriate for the person observing the fast to wear the best clothes according to his ability, sit on the seat, and after chanting Aaj three times, start the worship of Lord Shiva. It is said to be best to worship Lord Shiva along with his friends after becoming pure in the state of daily rituals. O Narada, it is appropriate for the person observing the fast to read the greatness of Shivratri himself or listen to it from someone else. It is necessary to worship the person narrating the story in many ways. It is said to be best to offer the best things to Lord Shiva and to worship the Shivling in the four hills in the morning. One should celebrate a big festival by staying awake the whole night. In the morning, after taking bath again, it is said to be best to worship Lord Shiva. After praying in the morning, the devotee should pray to Lord Sadashiv that O Lord, I have devoted my mind to your fast with devotion and you are pleased to know me as your servant and fulfill all my desires. After saying this, a floral tribute should be placed on Lord Shiva. In this way, after the completion of the fasting rituals, one should happily donate to the Brahmins and according to one's capacity, please the Shiva devotees, Brahmins and the devotees by donating good food etc. O Narada, now I describe in detail the method of worship in all the four mountains. At the time of evening, first of all, after being sure of the number etc. of all the daily rituals, worship in the first mountain in this way. First of all, worship both the Lingas of Shiva, i.e., the first and the second Shivling, whichever is at its place, with Panchamrit by reciting separate mantras. After this, after reciting 108 mantras, bathe Lord Shiva with a stream of water and then recite the mantras and worship Lord Shiva with all the material. Shiva should be worshipped with the mantra given by your Gurudwara or Shiva should be worshipped with the five syllable mantra or it is appropriate to worship only by taking the name of Shiva. All the best items of worship like sandalwood, black sesame, lotus flower, oleander flower etc. should be offered by taking the 88 names of Shiva. Aarti should be performed after burning the best fragrant incense and the Bael should be respected by offering the best dishes. After worshipping in this way, one should meditate on Shiva while doing a bow down. If the worshipper is a devotee of some other deity, then it is appropriate for him to chant the five syllable mantra of Shiva. Show cow urine in front of Shiva and sit in water and perform tarpan. After that, resolve to feed five Brahmins. If you are not capable of doing so, then resolve to feed only one Brahmin. In this way, keep celebrating the festival in the prescribed manner till the first prahar is over. O Narada, worship Shiva in this manner even when the second prahar starts, but in this method of worship it has been said that the cow and lotus flowers should first sink from the mountain and the song By adding milk to the city, the meaning of the middle east should be given. Similarly, whenever Shiva's name is chanted at every place, it should be doubled from the first mountain. O Narad, the worship of the third prahar should also be done in this way, but it has been said that wheat grass and madar flowers are appropriate in this worship. Many types of incense sticks and lamps should be used for the worship of the person, ripe pomegranate and camphor aarti should be done from the first mountain. And whenever Shiva's mantra is doubled from the first, O Narad, it has been said so much in the worship of the fourth prahar that mouth uda and piyun, that is, seven types of complex and other sweets made from the maker of urad, the travel of urad should be made and offered as bhog. It is appropriate to give respect to many types of fruits or bananas. Shiva's mantra should be chanted beforehand and a lot of celebration should be done. O Narad, in the worship of all the four mountains, it is said auspicious to offer innumerable dilaao patra on Shiva because Shivaji loves the verses. One should gather many people and celebrate by dancing, singing, etc. on all four hills. In this way, meditating on Shivaji while staying awake the entire night is said to be the most important. It is not appropriate to bring any other resolution in mind. Listening to the significance of Shivratri, one should spend the night happily. It is appropriate for the person observing the fast to sit on the same seat all four times and, being devoid of people, spend money as much as one can. At sunrise, the fasting person should sit on the same seat while prostrating to the Brahmins, with utmost happiness in his mind, he should collect many types of gifts and anoint Lord Sadashiv with pure water. Then, in addition to the number of Brahmins that he has resolved to feed, feed as many more Brahmins as possible, and while eating food, feed all the people who come. O Narada, all the works that I have told you are worth doing for the rich, but if a poor person is not able to worship with appropriate materials, then he has no friend. In this wayAfter worshipping the mountain in all four ways, take a bath in the morning and worship Shiva again. After taking blessings from Brahmins, immerse Shiva along with all the deities. When you are done with these activities, take permission from Brahmins and eat with your family. O Narada, I have told you the method of observing Shivaratri fast which I had heard from Vishnu Ji.
