श्री शिव महापुराण कथा दसवां खंड अध्याय 5

ब्रह्मा जी बोले हे नारद अब मैं तुमसे यह वृत्तांत कहता हूं जिस प्रकार गुण निधि नामक ब्राह्मण ने शिवरात्रि व्रत करके आनंद प्राप्त किया था गंगा के तट पर ध्रुव पूरी नामक एक नगर बसा हुआ है उसे नगर को काफिला का कर भी पुकारते हैं वह स्थान अत्यंत पवित्र है क्योंकि वहां भगवान सदाशिव रामेश्वर के नाम से तथा भगवती सत्य काली के नाम से विराजमान है उसे नगर में यज्ञ दत्त नामक ब्राह्मण शिवजी का परम भक्त है वह दक्षिण नाम से प्रसिद्ध था राजा ने उसे ब्राह्मण को बहुत सम्मान तथा धन देकर प्रसन्न किया था उसकी पत्नी परम धर्मात्मा एवं ग्रहणी के कार्य में अत्यंत कुशल थी उसे समय बाद उसे ब्राह्मण के घर एक पुत्र ने जन्म लिया जिसका नाम गुण निधि रखा गया यज्ञ दत्त ने उसे धर्म कर्म का ज्ञान कराया एवं संपूर्ण विद्याएं पढ़ाई फिर बड़े होने पर उनका विवाह भी कर दिया हे नारद को समय पश्चात गुण निधि बुरी संगति में पड़कर महादुष्ट बन गया उसके भेद तथा पुराणों क के धर्म को छोड़ दिया माता ने स्वयं अच्छा निधि को अनेक बार शुभ मार्ग का उपदेश दिया परंतु वह किसी भी प्रकार नहीं मना धीरे-धीरे वह महा बी विचार कर माध्यमिक जंगल कोर तथा मांस भक्त बन गई वह अपनी स्त्री को छोड़कर परम स्त्रियों के साथ ब्राह्मण करने लगा इस समय वैष्णो में उसने अपने पिता का ध्यान नष्ट कर डाला एक दिन वह अपने पिता की हाथ की अंगूठी को कहीं युही में हार गई सहयोग से यज्ञ दांत ने उसे किसी एक जारी के हाथ में देख लिया उसे यह पूछा कि तुमने इस अंगूठी को कहां से पाया है तब जारी ने उसे यह उत्तर दिया मैं से चुरा कर नहीं लाया हूं तुम्हारा पुत्र बहुत बड़ा जारी है अभी से मैं इस अंगूठी को हुए में जीते हैं हे नारद जुवारी की बात सुनकर यज्ञ दत्त राजा से अपना मस्तक निशा का भाव लौट आया और अपनी स्त्री को गुण निधि के बारे में यह पूछने लगा कि आजकल तुम्हारे पुत्र का चाल चलन कैसा है यद्यपि याददाश्त को सब वृतांत ज्ञात हो चुका था फिर भी गुण निधि किसी भी प्रकार के बुरे कर्मों में नहीं है यह सुनकर याददाश्त ने क्रुद्ध होकर उसे और अपनी मांग कर गुण निधि के नाम कुछ योग छोड़ दिया अर्थात उसका त्याग कर डाला यह देखकर अच्छा निधि की माता ने हाथ जोड़कर अपनी पति को समझाते हुए बहुत प्रार्थना किया तब यह विदत ने अपने क्रोध को शांत कर लिया परंतु जब गुण निधि ने उसके पिता के क्रोध का समाचार सुना तो वह उसके भाई से रोता पड़ता हुआ घर से बाहर भाग गया हे नारद गुण निधि को मार्ग में चलते-चलते जब सूर्यास्त हो गया तब वह एक स्थान पर बैठकर रोने लगा सहयोग व सुकून दिन शिवरात्रि थी एक शिव भक्त पूजन की सामग्री सहित इस मार्ग में जा रहा था जहां अच्छा निधि ठक्कर बैठा हुआ था पूर्ण निधि को उसे समय बड़ी जोर की भूख लगी रही थी तब उसने यह देखा कि वह लोग उत्तम पकवानों को शिव जी के ऊपर चढ़ने के लिए ले जा रहे हैं तो उसने सोचा कि मुझे भी इन लोगों के साथ शिव मंदिर में जाना चाहिए जब यह लोग इन वस्तुओं को शिवजी पर चढ़कर के लिए ले जा रहे हैं तो उसे सोचा कि मुझे भी इन लोगों के साथ शिव मंदिर में जाना चाहिए जब यह लोग उन वस्तुओं को शिवजी पर चढ़कर निंद्रा मग्न हो जाएंगे तब मैं उन्हें उठाकर खा जाऊंगा फिर मेरी दुआ का निवारण हो जाएगा हे नारद इस प्रकार निश्चय करके अच्छा निधि उसे शिव भक्त के पीछे जलाकर शिवालय में जा पहुंचा शिव भक्तों ने मंदिर के भीतर पहुंचकर पोषण पोषण उपचार द्वारा भगवान सदाशिव की पूजा की थी से अच्छा निधि ध्यान पूर्वक देखता रहा तदुपरांत जब वे लोग मूर्ति के पास ले कर अलग हटकर कुछ उगने लगे तब वह सबको सोता हुआ जानकर मूर्ति के समीप जा पहुंचा और धीरे-धीरे पाक बढ़ता हुआ शिवजी पर चढ़ गए निवेद को उठाकर खा लेने की चेष्टा करने लगा भक्त लोग बाहर के शहर में बैठे हुए थे जहां शिवलिंग स्थापित था वहीं दीपक बुझ जाने के कारण अंधकार को गया अच्छा निधि ने नेविट को उठाने की इच्छा से अपने शरीर के वेस्टन को एक टुकड़ा फाड़कर सर्वप्रथम बाती जले फिर उसने शिवजी के ऊपर चढ़े हुए निर्मित को हाथ में उठा लिया जब वह मन मे अत्यंत प्रसन्नता होता हुआ शीघ्रता पूर्वक शिवालय से बाहर निकाला उसे समय सहयोग वास किसी शिवभक्त के पांव से उनके पांव टकरा गया जिसके कारण उसकी निंदा भंग हो गई और वह चोर चोर का कर चिल्ला उठा हे नारद शोर हो जाने पर सब लोग उड़ बैठे इस समय नगर के रक्षा भी उसे स्थान पर आ पहुंचे उन्होंने अपने बलों द्वारा गुण निधि को मार डाला किसी पूर्व जन्म के पुणे के कारण गुण निधि मृत्यु के समय तथा शिव निर्मला नहीं खा शक था जो लोग शिवजी पर चढ़े हुए प्रसाद को जी शिव निर्मला कहा जाता है खा लेते हैं उन्हें बहुत पाप लगता है तथा उन्हें अनेक प्रकार के दुःख उठाने पड़ते हैं जब वेद तथा पुराणों में इस बात की पुष्टि की है कि शिव निर्मल खाने से बड़ा पाप लगता है आज तो गुण निधि की मृत्यु हो जाने पर यमराज के दूध उसे बांधने के लिए आए इस समय शिवजी ने अपने घरों को उजाकर यह आज्ञा दी कि गानों अच्छा निधि के में शिवरात्रि का व्रत रखकर हमारे पूजन को अपनी आंखों से देखा है तथा हमारा निर्मला भी उसे नहीं खाया है इसके अतिरिक्त उसे दीपक जलाकर अपने हाथ से हमारी आरती उतारी है इसलिए हमने उसके सभी पाप नष्ट कर दिए हैं और उन्हें अपना सेवा बना लिया है जो व्यक्ति शिवरात्रि के दिन हमारा पूजन देखा है वह हमें अत्यंत प्रिय है क्योंकि शिवजी का व्रत सब रातों से अधिक श्रेष्ठ है अस्तु हमारी कृपा से वह कालिंग देश का राजा होगा तब प्राण कुबेर बनाकर हमारे मित्र के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हो तीनों लोक में यश प्राप्त करेगा हे नारद शिव जी के मुख से यह आजा सुनकर गणों ने यमदूतों के पास पहुंचकर उसके हाथ से गुण निधि को छीन लिया और उसे शिवजी के पास ले गए शिवजी की कृपा से गुण निधि कालिंग देश का राजा होकर 10 नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुआ था दो प्रांत वह कुबेर बनाकर शिवजी के मित्र के नाम से संसार में प्रसिद्ध हुआ

Brahma Ji said, O Narada, now I am telling you this story, how a Brahmin named Gun Nidhi got bliss by observing Shivaratri fast. There is a city named Dhruva Puri situated on the bank of Ganga. That city is also called Kafila. That place is very holy because Lord Sadashiv resides there in the name of Rameshwar and Bhagwati Satya Kali. In that city, a Brahmin named Yagya Dutt is a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He was famous by the name Dakshin. The king had pleased that Brahmin by giving him a lot of respect and money. His wife was very pious and very skilled in the work of a housewife. After some time, a son was born to that Brahmin, whose name was Gun Nidhi. Yagya Dutt taught him about Dharma and Karma and taught him all the knowledge. Then when he grew up, they were also married. O Narada, after some time, Gun Nidhi fell into bad company and became very wicked. He left the religion of the Puranas and the Vedas. Mother herself preached the good path to Achcha Nidhi many times, but he did not agree in any way. Gradually, after thinking a lot, he became a forest-dweller and meat-devotee. He left his wife and went to live. He started having affairs with women. At this time, he destroyed his father's concentration in Vaishno. One day, he lost his father's ring somewhere. With great difficulty, Yagya Dant saw it in the hand of a Jwari and asked him from where did you get this ring? Then Jari replied to him that I have not stolen it from you. Your son is very big, Jwari is already living with this ring. O Narad. On hearing the words of the Jwari, Yagya Dant got his head shaved and started asking his wife about Gun Nidhi that how is your son's conduct these days. Although Yaddasmta had come to know all the stories, still Gun Nidhi is not involved in any kind of bad deeds. On hearing this, Yaddasmta got angry and asked for him and his own money and left some money in the name of Gun Nidhi, that is, he renounced him. Seeing this, Achcha Nidhi's mother folded her hands and prayed a lot to her husband, then this Jwari calmed down his anger, but when Gun Nidhi heard the news of his father's anger, he went out of the house crying to his brother. O Narada, Gun Nidhi ran away. When the sun set while walking on the road, he sat down at one place and started crying. It was the day of Shivratri. A Shiv devotee was going on this road with worship material, where Gun Nidhi Thakkar was sitting. Gun Nidhi was feeling very hungry at that time. Then he saw that those people were taking delicious dishes to offer to Lord Shiva, so he thought that I should also go to the Shiv temple with these people. When these people were taking these things to offer to Lord Shiva, he thought that I should also go to the Shiv temple with these people. When these people would fall asleep after offering those things to Lord Shiva, then I would pick them up and eat them, then my prayer would be fulfilled. O Narada, having decided like this, Gun Nidhi lit it behind the Shiv devotee and reached the Shiva temple. The Shiv devotees had worshiped Lord Sadashiv by reaching inside the temple with nourishment treatment. Gun Nidhi kept watching carefully. Thereafter, when those people took him near the idol and moved aside, something started growing, then he, knowing everyone to be sleeping, went to the idol. He reached near the temple and gradually increasing his speed he climbed on the Shivling and tried to pick up the offering and eat it. The devotees were sitting in the outer city where the Shivling was installed. It was dark as the lamp had been extinguished. Gun Nidhi with the desire to pick up the offering to him tore a piece of his body's waste paper and first of all lit the wick. Then he picked up the offering that was placed on Shivji in his hand. Feeling very happy in his heart, he quickly came out of the temple. At the time of his arrival, his foot collided with the foot of a Shiv devotee due to which his slander broke and he shouted thief thief, O Narada. When the noise was made, everyone flew away. At this time, the protectors of the city also reached the spot. They killed Gun Nidhi with their forces. Due to the sins of some previous birth, Gun Nidhi could not eat Shiv Nirmala at the time of death. Those who eat the Prasad offered to Shivji, which is called Shiv Nirmala, they commit a lot of sins and have to bear many kinds of sorrows. It has been confirmed in the Vedas and Puranas that Shiv Nirmala is greater than eating. It is a sin today. After the death of Gun Nidhi, Yamraj came to tie him up. At that time, Shiv Ji illuminated his houses and gave this order that Gun Nidhi has kept the fast of Shivratri and has seen our worship with his own eyes and he has not eaten our Nirmala either. Apart from this, he has lit a lamp and performed our aarti with his own hands. Therefore, we have destroyed all his sins and made him our servant. The person who has seen our worship on the day of Shivratri is very dear to us because Shiv Ji's fast is the best of all nights. Therefore, by our grace, he will become the king of Kalinga country. Then, by making Pran Kuber, he will become famous as our friend and will get fame in all the three worlds. O Narada, on hearing this order from Shiv Ji's mouth, the Ganas reached the Yamdoots and snatched Gun Nidhi from his hand and took him to Shiv Ji. By Shiv Ji's grace, Gun Nidhi became the king of Kalinga country and became famous by 10 names. He made two provinces Kuber and became famous in the world as Shiv Ji's friend.
