श्री शिव महापुराण कथा दसवां खंड अध्याय 9

ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा हे नारद अब मैं प्रदोष अर्थत्रीय उदास का व्रत वर्णन करता हूं मैं उन स्त्री पुरुषों को परमधाम में समझता हूं जो इस बात को धारण करते हैं प्रत्येक मास के दोनों पक्ष में दो त्रयोदशी आती है इस व्रत का विधान या है कि प्रातः काल के समय इस नहानती नित्य कर्मों से निर्मित हो भगवान सदाशिव का पूजन करें तथा व्रत का संकल्प करके प्रदोष व्रत धारण करें तब तीन घड़ी दिन शेष रह जाए तब अपनी शक्ति के अनुसार पुन स्नान कर मौन धारण करें तथा श्वेत वस्त्र पहने संध्या के समय जप करने को प्राण प्रेम पूर्वक भगवान सदा शिव का पोषण पोषण आहार पूजन करें तथा स्तुति करता हुआ उन्हें प्रसन्नता पूर्वक दंडवत प्रणाम करें तत्पश्चात ब्राह्मण भोजन कर चुके तथा स्वयं भी बिना नमक का भोजन करें हे नारद इस प्रकार किया हुआ प्रदोष व्रत संपूर्ण पापों को नष्ट करने वाला होता है इसके समान अन्य कोई व्रत नहीं है वह तथा पुराण का यह कहना है कि प्रदोष काल में किया हुआ शिवजी का पूजन अत्यंत आनंद दायक होता है यह बात तीनों लोक में प्रसिद्ध है इस संबंध में मैं तुमसे यह विचित्र वृतांत कहता हूं उसे ध्यान पूर्वक सुनो हे नारद पुरातन काल में उज्जैनी पुरी में चंद्रसेन नामक एक राजा शिव जी का परम भक्त हुआ वह सदैव त्रयोदशी व्रत रखना और विधि पूर्वक शिव जी का पूजन किया करता था वह महाकाल लिंग की पूजा करता और हर समय उन्हें के ध्यान में भागना रहता एक दिन मनी भद्रा नामक शिव जी के एक गाने उसे राजा पर प्रसन्न होकर उसे चिंतामणि नामक एक मारी थी उसे मनी का यह गुण था कि जिस मनुष्य के पास वह मनी रहती है तथा जो मनुष्य उसे देखा है स्पर्श करता अथवा स्मरण करता था वह संपूर्ण अभी पत्तियों से छुटकारा अतुलित आनंद को प्राप्त करता था उसे मनी का स्पर्श पाते ही सभी धातुएं स्वर्ण की हो जाती थी आज तो उस्मानी को धारण करने के कारण राजा चंद्रसेन सूर्य का समान तेजस्वी प्रतीत होने लगा हे नारद जब अन्य राजाओं को उसे मनी का प्रभाव ज्ञात हुआ तब उन्होंने चंद्रसेन से उसे मनी को स्वयं प्राप्त करना चाहा परंतु राजा ने किसी को वह मनी नहीं दिया निदान सब राजाओं ने एकत्रित होकर उसके नगर पर चढ़ाई कर दी जब उज्जैनी पुरी के चारों ओर उन राजाओं की सेवा घेरे डाले पड़ी हुई थी तभी सभी नगर निवासी अत्यंत व्याकुल हो रहे थे उसे समय दूसरे देश शिव जी का प्रदोष व्रत आया तब राजा अपने शत्रुओं की कुछ भी चिंता ना करके तीन घड़ी तीन शेष रहने पर भगवान महाकाल का पूजन करके निर्मित मंदिर जा पहुंचा जिस समय राजा चंद्रसेन महाकाल का पूजन कर रहा था उसी समय एक स्त्री अपने गोद में 5 वर्ष के बाल एक बालक को लेकर कहीं से उसके पास आ पहुंची राजा जिस प्रकार शिवजी का पूजन कर रहा था उसे विधि को इस स्त्री का बालक बड़े ध्यान पूर्वक देखता रहा कुछ देर बाद जब वह स्त्री अपने पुत्र को साथ लेकर घर चल गई तब घर जाकर उसे बालक के हृदय में शिवजी की ऐसी भक्ति उत्पन्न हुई कि वह कहीं से एक पत्थर का टुकड़ा उठा लाया और जिस प्रकार उसने राजा को पूजन करते हुए देखा था उसी प्रकार स्वयं भी उसका पूजन करने का प्रयत्न करने लगा हे नारद जी समय वह छोटा सा बल शिला खंड का पूजन करने में सालाना था उसी समय उसकी माता ने उसको भोजन करने के लिए दो-तीन बार आवाज दी परंतु वह उन्हें सुनकर भी अपनी स्थान पर निश्चल भाव से बैठ रहा तब वह स्त्री स्वयं अत्यंत क्रुद्ध में भरकर उसके पास जा पहुंची जब उसने बालक को एक पत्थर का पूजन करते हुए देखा तो पहले तो उसे खूब मारा फिर उसे शिवलिंग को उठाकर दूर फेंक दिया इसके बाद वह उसे हाथ पकड़ कर घर के भीतर खींच ले गई तब वह बालक है है करके रोने लगा तथा इस अवस्था में मुर्जित हो गया मुरझा अवस्था में उसने एक दृश्य देखा जिसमें यह जान पड़ा था कि एक शिवालय प्रश्नों से बना हुआ है उसके मध्य में एक प्रार्थना जातित सिंहासन रखा है तथा उसे सिंहासन पर उसका शिवलिंग प्रतिष्ठित है उसे दृश्य को देखकर लाख ने भगवान सदाशिव की अत्यंत स्तुति करते हुए प्रार्थना किया है प्रभु मेरी माता मूर्ख है अतः आप उसका अपराध क्षमा कर दें हे नारद संध्या के समय जब उसे बालक की आंखें खुली तो उसने यह देखा कि उसका घर सचमुच की प्रार्थना तथा स्वर्ण में निर्मित परम सुंदर हो गई है इस अद्भुत चरित्र को देखकर बालक न्यूज़ सैया के समीप पहुंचकर अपने माता को जगाया जब माता ने अपनी आंखें खोली और वह अद्भुत चरित्र देखा तो अत्यंत प्रसन्नता में भरकर अपने पुत्र से करने लगी है पुत्र या सब शिवजी की कृपा का फल है वस्तु किसी प्रकार का आश्चर्य नहीं करना चाहिए जब राजा चंद्रसेन को यह समाचार मिला कि उसे बालक की भक्ति से प्रसन्न होकर शिवजी ने ऐसी कृपा की तो वह स्वयं उसे मंदिर को देखने गया वहां उसके बालक की तथा उसके माता की अत्यंत प्रशंसा की जब अन्य आक्रमण राजाओं को यह समाचार मिला तो वह उसे नगर पर सूजी की ऐसी कृपा देखकर अपने-अपने घर को लौट गए

Brahma Ji said, O Narada, now I describe the fast of Pradosh Arthatraya Udas. I consider those men and women in the supreme abode who observe this. There are two Trayodashi in both the sides of every month. The rule of this fast is that in the morning, after bathing and performing daily rituals, worship Lord Sadashiv and after taking a vow to observe the fast, observe the Pradosh fast. When three hours of the day are left, then take a bath again according to your strength and observe silence and wear white clothes. In the evening, do the chanting and worship Lord Sadashiv with love and while praising him, bow down to him happily. After that, the Brahmins have their meal and you yourself also eat without salt. O Narada, the Pradosh fast observed in this way destroys all sins. There is no other fast like it. And the Purana says that the worship of Lord Shiva done in Pradosh period is very blissful. This thing is famous in all the three worlds. In this regard, I tell you this strange story. Listen to it carefully. O Narada, in ancient times, there was a king named Chandrasen in Ujjain Puri who was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He always kept Trayodashi fast and used to worship Lord Shiva according to the rituals. He used to worship Mahakal Linga and used to meditate on him all the time. One day, a song of Lord Shiva named Mani Bhadra was pleased with him and gave him a name Chintamani. This Mani had such a quality that the person who had that Mani and the person who saw, touched or remembered it, got rid of all the worries and got incomparable bliss. All metals turned into gold on getting a touch of that Mani. Today, due to wearing the Mani, King Chandrasen started appearing as radiant as the Sun. O Narada, when other kings came to know about the effect of that Mani, they wanted to get that Mani from Chandrasen themselves, but the king did not give that Mani to anyone. Ultimately, all the kings gathered and attacked his city. When the servants of those kings were surrounding Ujjain Puri, all the residents of the city were getting very restless. At that time, Lord Shiva was going to another country for Pradosh. When the fast came, the king, without worrying about his enemies, went to the built temple and worshipped Lord Mahakal with three hours remaining. When king Chandrasen was worshipping Mahakal, a woman carrying a five-year-old boy in her lap came to him from somewhere. The way the king was worshipping Lord Shiva, the child of this woman kept watching it very carefully. After some time, when the woman went home with her son, then after going home, such devotion for Lord Shiva arose in the heart of the boy that he brought a piece of stone from somewhere and started trying to worship him in the same way as he had seen the king worshiping. O Narad ji, at that time that small boy was busy worshipping the rock. At that time his mother called him two-three times to eat food, but even after hearing them, he kept sitting motionless at his place. Then the woman herself went to him in a very angry mood. When she saw the boy worshipping a stone, first she beat him a lot, then she picked up the Shivling and threw it away. After this, she caught him by the hand. When the mother pulled him inside the house, the child started crying and became numb. In this numb state, he saw a scene in which it seemed that a Shiva temple was made of temples. In the middle of it, a prayer throne was kept and Shivalinga was installed on the throne. Seeing this scene, Lakshman praised Lord Sadashiv and prayed, "My mother is a fool, so please forgive her crime, O Narada." When the child opened his eyes in the evening, he saw that his house had become very beautiful, made of gold. Seeing this amazing character, the child went near the mother's house and woke up his mother. When the mother opened her eyes and saw that amazing character, she became very happy and started telling her son, "Son, all this is the result of the grace of Lord Shiva. There should be no surprise of any kind." When King Chandrasen got the news that Lord Shiva had blessed him with such grace after being pleased with the devotion of the child, he himself went to see the temple and praised the child and his mother a lot. When other attacking kings got this news, they became very proud of the city after seeing such a grace. returned to their homes
