ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा हे नारद पुरातन काल में को नामक एक मनुष्य महा पापी तथा ब्राह्मणों को निंदा करने वाला था उसने अनेक जीवों की हिंसा भी कि उसे समय बाद वह ऐसा दरिद्र हुआ कि उसके शरीर पर कोपिन तक नहीं रह गई तब वह चोरी और चल द्वारा अपना समय व्यतीत करने लगा एक दिन वह एक वैशाख के लिए पैन फुल तथा चंदन लिए दौड़ा चला जा रहा था कि इस समय सहयोग से पृथ्वी पर गिर कर मलित हो गया कुछ देर बाद जब उसे चैतन्यता प्राप्त हुई तो उसने पृथ्वी पर गिरे हुए पान फूल आदि का शिव जी के नाम संकल्प कर दिया तथा अपने मुख से नमः शिवाय शब्द का उच्चारण करता हुआ मृत्यु को प्राप्त हो गया यमराज के दूध उसे महा पापी जानकर बांधकर एवं के समीप ले गए उसे समय यह ने उसे संबोधित करते हुए यह कहा है कंठ तूने संसार में अनेक दुष्कर्म किए हैं तथा अपने धर्म को त्याग है वस्तु तुझे हम घोर नरक में डालकर कास्ट देंगे हे नारद यमराज की बात सुनकर गौरव ने उत्तर दिया हेप्मदर्शी धर्मराज आप जो यह कहते हैं कि मैं पापी हूं सो ठीक नहीं है एक शुभ कर्म करने के कारण मेरे संपूर्ण पाठ नष्ट हो गए गौरव के मुख से लिया हुआ चाप सुनकर यमराज में चित्रगुप्त को अपने पास बुलाकर कहा है चित्रगुप्त तुम इस पापी की थी हा तो देखो कि यह अपने को निष्पाप बता रहा है मैं इस नर्क में डालना चाहता हूं और तू इसके पाप पुण्य काजल लेखा-जोखा हो उसे तुम मेरे सम्मुख उपस्थित करो यमराज के मुख से इन शब्दों को सुनकर चित्रगुप्त ने शिवजी को स्मरण किया था तो प्राण कौरवों को शिवजी का कृपा प्राप्त जानकार इस प्रकार उत्तर दिया यह महाराज यद्यपि इस मनुष्य ने जीवन भर महापाप किया है परंतु मृत्यु के समय इसके मुख से नमः शिवाय शब्द निकला है इतना ही नहीं वैश्य के निर्माता जिस सामग्र को लिया जा रहा था उसे भी इसने शिवजी कोसमृत किया है आज तू एक महा पुण्य के कारण इसके संपूर्ण पाप नष्ट हो गए मेरे विचार से आप इसे स्वर्ग भेजो तथा तीन खादी के लिए इंद्रासन पर भी बैठाया वहां इसकी जो इच्छा हो वह कार्य करें हे नारद चित्रगुप्त की बात सुनकर यमराज ने धर्मराज का उत्तम स्वरूप धारण कर गौरव को अपना दर्शन दिया तथा शिव भक्त होने के कारण उसकी अत्यंत प्रशंसा भी कि उसे समय देवगुरु बृहस्पति जी के रावत हाथी को लिए हुए अन्य देवताओं के साथ धर्मराज के समीप आ पहुंचे हुए गौरव को गिरावट हाथी पर बैठकर इंद्रलोक को ले गए वहां उसने तीन घड़ी के लिए इंद्रासन पर बैठा दिया गया जिस समय देवराज इंद्र को हटाकर गौरव उसके सिंहासन पर बैठा तो अपने किरदार में उसे अत्यंत प्रसन्नता हुई हे नारद जब गौरव इंद्रासन पर बैठ गया उसे समय तुमने उसके उंगलियों को छींक करने के निर्माता उसे यह सलाह दी कि तुम इंद्राणियों को अपने पास बुलाओ और उसके साथ वह गिलास करके आनंद प्राप्त करो परंतु तुम्हारी बात सुनकर गौरव ने यह उत्तर दिया यह नारद हमें इंद्राणी से कोई प्रयोजन नहीं है इतना कह कर कौरवों ने तुम्हें तो विदा किया तथा स्वयं अपने पुण्य को बढ़ाने के लिए दान देना आरंभ कर दिया उसके अगस्त की मुनि ऋषि को रावत हाथी विश्वामित्र ऊंचे श्रद्धा घोड़ा जलवा ऋषि को कम दे दो गांवों तथा कल्पवृक्ष देखकर अन्य वस्तुएं भी ऋषि मुनियों को दान दिया तीन घड़ी के भीतर ही उसने समस्त शिव शिव क्षेत्र में जाकर भगवान सदा शिव का पूजन किया तथा ब्राह्मणों को दान देकर संतुष्ट कर दिया हे नारद जब तीन घड़ी का समय व्यतीत हो गया तब देवराज इंद्र अपने सिंहासन पर अरुण हुए उसे समय इंद्र ने शिव जी की माया के वशीभूत हो इंद्राणी को अपने समीप बुलाकर क्रोध प्रकट करते हुए यह कहा यह सांची गौरव ने तुम्हारे साथ मिथुन अवश्य किया होगा आज तो तुम जो सत्य बात हो उसे हम बताएं उसे समय इंद्राणी ने हंसते हुए यह उत्तर दिया है स्वामी गौरव बहुत शुद्ध व्यक्ति है वह अत्यंत निर्मल है वह शिवजी उसके ऊपर अत्यंत दयालु है भगवान शंकर की कृपा से वह माया मोह आदि से छूटकर परम पवित्र हो चुका है
