श्री शिव महापुराण कथा दसवां खंड अध्याय 21

ब्रह्मा जी बोले हे नारद प्राचीन काल में विद्या देश में वेद मित्र नामक एक विद्वान ब्राह्मण रहता था उसका मित्र सारा स्वस्थ नामक एक अन्य वेदपाठी ब्राह्मण था कुछ समय उपरांत वेद मित्र तथा शाश्वत के यहां एक-एक पुत्र ने जन्म लिया उन दोनों के नाम समान तथा सुमेधा हुए हुए दोनों बालक के स्वभाव तथा कार्यों में एक दूसरे के समान थे उन्होंने एक ही गुरु से बिटिया पड़ी तथा अपनी सेवा द्वारा माता-पिता को प्रसन्न किया जब वह बालक पड़े बड़े हुए तो एक दिन दोनों के माता-पिता ने किस प्रकार कहा आप तुम्हें 16 वर्ष के हो गए आज तो हम तुम्हारा भी वह करना चाहते हैं परंतु विवाह के लिए धन आवश्यक होता है इसलिए सर्वप्रथम तुम धान का संग्रह करो हम तुम्हें धन प्राप्ति का एक उपाय बदलते हैं उसके अनुसार आचरण करने पर तुम्हें यथौष्ठ धाम की प्राप्ति होगी वह उपाय यह है कि तुम दोनों यहां के राजा के पास जाओ और उन्हें अपने विद्या के चमत्कार से प्रसन्न कर धन प्राप्त करो हे नारद माता-पिता कि आज्ञा स्वीकार कर हुए दोनों राजा के समीप जा पहुंचे वहां उन्होंने अपनी विद्या की चतुर्ता प्रगति कर राजा से धन प्राप्त किया जब हुए घर लौटने को हुए उसे समय राजा ने उनसे यह कहा है ब्राह्मण पुत्रों हम तुम्हें और भी अधिक धन की प्राप्ति के लिए एक उपाय बताते हैं सुनो उपाय यह है कि मध्य देश का राजा चित्रानंद तथा उसकी रानी सीमावंती प्रति सोमवार को व्रत धारण कर ब्राह्मणों को दान दिया करते हैं तथा स्त्रियों सहित उन्हें भोजन करते हैं वास्तु तुम उनके यहां इस प्रकार जो कि तुम में से एक तो स्त्री का स्वरूप धारण कर ले और दूसरा उसका पति बन जाए ऐसा करने पर जब उन्हें वहां से धन प्राप्त हो जाए तब तुम फिर लौट कर हमारे घर आना है नारद राजा के वचन सुनकर उन ब्राह्मण पुत्रों ने अत्यंत भयभीत होकर उत्तर दिया है राजन हमें ऐसे धन की आवश्यकता नहीं है अस्तु हम आपकी आज्ञा का पालन करने में असमर्थ हैं कृपया करके आप हमें धर्म के विरुद्ध चलने का उपदेश मत कीजिए हे नारद यह सुनकर राजा ने वेद का प्रमाण देते हुए उन बालकों से कहा है ब्राह्मण पुत्रों हम तुम्हें वेद किया गया अनुसार ही यह कहते हैं कि देवता गुरु माता पिता तथा राजा की आज्ञा का तिरस्कार करना उचित नहीं है वह आजा चाहे उचित हो चाहे अनुचित उनका पालन करना सभी मनुष्यों का धर्म है राजा की इस आजा को उन दोनों ने स्वीकार कर लिया तब समवन ने तो स्त्री का आवेश बनाया और सुमेर उसका पति बनकर राजा चित्रानंद के समीप जा पहुंचा संध्या के समय शिव पूजन करने को प्रात जब राजा रानी ने सभी ब्राह्मणों को इसकी पत्तियों सहित शिव पार्वती का स्वरूप जानकर दान देना आरंभ किया तब सुमेर और समाधान भी पति-पत्नी के रूप में उनके सम्मुख उपस्थित हुए उसे समय रानी सीमावंती सामंत को प्रीत नारी के रूप में देखकर बहुत हंसी फिर भी राजा रानी ने उन दोनों को गौरी शंकर का रूप जानकर पूजा तथा भोजन आदि कर कर बहुत दक्षिणा देने के उपरांत विदा किया वहां से छुट्टी प्रकार जब दोनों ब्राह्मण पुत्र अपने घर की ओर चले और बीच में एक वैन में पहुंचे उसे समय स्त्री रूप धारी सामान के हृदय में ठीक वैसे ही भाव जागृत हुई जैसे एक काम पीड़ा नारी के हृदय में होते हैं उसे अवस्था मैं उसने सुमेर को संबोधित करते हुए यह कहा देखो यह वन भोग विलास करने के लिए कैसा उपयुक्त है आओ हम तुम दोनों यहां मिथुन करें सामान की बात सुनकर सुमेर ने यह समझा कि वह हंसी कर रहा है आज तू वह मुस्कुराता हुआ बिना कोई उत्तर दिए आगे बढ़ने लगा कुछ दूर और चलकर स्त्री रूप धारी सामान में फिर पहले के समान काम पीड़ा होकर उसने कहा यह पति इस समय कामदेव के बालों से मैं अत्यंत दुखी हो रही हूं भला तुम मेरे साथ रति क्यों नहीं करते हो जब तक तुम मेरे साथ रहती नहीं करोगी मुझे आगे नहीं चला जाएगा अतः तुम मेरी इच्छा को पूर्ण करो इन शब्दों को सुनकर जब सुमेर्था ने पीछे मुड़कर देखा तो उसे ज्ञात हुआ कि वास्तव में ही समान एक परम सुंदरी स्त्री के रूप में बदल गया है और उसके नेत्रों से कामवासना प्रकट हो रही है तब उसने उसे संबोधित करते हुए कहा है सामान तुम वेदपाठी ब्रह्मचारी निष्पाप ब्रह्म ब्रह्म पुत्र हो फिर भला मुझे ऐसी बातें क्यों कर रहे हो हे नारद सुमेधा के यह वचन सुनकर शमवन ने जो कि उसे समय वास्तव में पूर्ण रूपेण स्त्री हो चुका था इस प्रकार कहा है पति यदि तुम विश्वास ना हो तो मेरे गुप्त अंग को देख लो उससे तुम्हें विदित हो जाएगा कि आप पुरुष नहीं अपितु स्त्री हूं या सुनकर सुविधा ने अत्यंत आश्चर्य में भरकर जब उसके अंगों की ओर दृष्टिपात किया तो यह जानते हुए देर ना लगी कि वास्तव में सामान का कथन सत्य है इस आश्चर्य को देखकर वह चकित रह गया और शिवजी का ध्यान धरने लगा तभी इस स्त्री ने इस प्रकार फिर कहा है युवक मैं काम के विवेक से अत्यंत पीड़ित हूं तुम मेरी अभिलाषा को पूर्ण करो तब सुमेधा ने उत्तर दिया है बंधु हम तुम दोनों वेट पार्टी ब्राह्मण पुत्र हैं इस समय तुम अवश्य स्त्री रूप को प्राप्त हो जाओगे परंतु तुम्हें इससे मुक्ति पाने के हेतु शिव गिरजा का ध्यान धारणा चाहिए विभव नरेश ने अपनी धारिता से हमें भाग लिया है यदि हम उसके कथा अनुसार कार्य नहीं करते तो ऐसे विपत्ति कभी नहीं आती यदि फिर भी तुम स्त्री बन रह तो मैं अपने पिता से आ गया लेकर तुम्हें अपनी पत्नी बना लूंगा इतना कह कर सुमेधा ने शिवजी की माया तथा रानी सीमावंती के व्रत के प्रभाव की अपने मन में अत्यंत प्रशंसा की हे नारद इस प्रकार सुमेधा ने स्त्री रूप सामंत को बहुत कुछ समझाया परंतु काम के वशीभूत होने के कारण उन्हें एक भी बात नहीं मानी उसने सुविधा को जबरदस्ती कांड से लगा लिया तदुपरांत हुए दोनों घर पहुंचे उसे समय दोनों के पिता सब हाल देख अत्यंत क्रुद्ध हो इधर देश नरेश के समीप गए उसे संबोधित करते हुए इस प्रकार कहने लगे हे राजन तुमने हमारी पुत्रों से ऐसा बुरा कर्म क्यों कराया जो इसमें से एक बालक स्त्री बन गया अब भला हमारे भीतर किस प्रकार मुक्ति हो सकेगा इस बालक के अतिरिक्त हमारे कुल में अन्य कोई संतान भी नहीं है सारस्वत ब्राह्मण राजा से इस प्रकार का कर्जत हो पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ा तब राजा ने सामान को स्त्री रूप में देखकर अपने मन में अत्यंत आचार्य करते हुए यह उत्तर दिया है ब्राह्मण भाई यह कभी नहीं समझता था कि तुम्हारा बालक वास्तव में ही स्त्री बन जाएगा मैंने तो अधिक धन की प्राप्ति के लिए ही इन्ही ऐसी युक्ति बताई थी आप कोई ऐसा उपाय बताएं जिसके करने से इस बालक का स्त्री भाव दूर हो जाएगा हे नारद ब्राह्मणों ने यह सुनकर राजा से कहा है राजन तुम अपने हृदय में शिवजी की भक्ति दिन करो तथा उन्हें से हमारे बालक की मुक्ति का उपाय जो यह सुनकर राजा अपनी रानी सहित शिव गिरज का पूजन करने लगा उसने अनेक प्रकार के उपाय द्वारा शिव गिरिजा को प्रसन्न कर लिया तथा गिरिजा जी ने प्रगट होकर राजा सेवर मांगने के लिए कहा उसे समय राजा उसकी प्रार्थना करते हुए बोला हे भगवती मैं यह चाहता हूं की सारस्वत ब्राह्मण का पुत्र जो स्त्री बन गया है वह फिर से पुरुष हो जाएगा राजा की इस प्रार्थना को सुनकर भगवती गिरिजा ने उत्तर दिया है राजन हम आपके भक्त की किसी प्रकार की आज्ञा नहीं करना चाहते आज तो तुमसे यह कहती हूं कि तुम बालक का विवाह सुमेधा के साथ कर दो इतना कह कर जब गिरजा अंतर ध्यान हो गई तब राजा ने दोनों ब्राह्मण को बुलाकर सब वृतांत का सुनाया उसे सुनकर शाश्वत ने अपने लड़के का विवाह सुमेधा के साथ कर दिया तब वह दोनों पति-पत्नी बनकर प्रसन्नता पूर्वक बिहार करने लगे भगवती गिरिजा की कृपा से साथ वक्त ब्राह्मण को एक दूसरे पुत्र की प्राप्ति हुई है नारद रानी से मोहती में सोमवार का जो व्रत किया था उसी में उसकी महिमा का यह प्रत्यक्ष चमत्कार तुम्हें मैं सुनना है इस चरित्र को जो कोई सुनता सुनता अथवा पड़ता है उसे भी दोनों लोक में आनंद प्राप्त होता है

Brahma Ji said, O Narada, in ancient times, a learned Brahmin named Veda Mitra lived in Vidya Desh. His friend was another Brahmin named Sara Swasth, who studied Vedas. After some time, a son was born to Veda Mitra and Shashwat. Both of them had the same name and were of the same intelligence. Both the children were similar in nature and actions. They got married to the same Guru and pleased their parents by their service. When the children grew up, one day their parents said, you have turned 16 years old. Today, we want to marry you too, but money is necessary for marriage. Therefore, first of all, you should collect rice. We will tell you a way to get money. By following that, you will get the best abode. That way, both of you should go to the king here and please him with the miracle of your knowledge and get money. O Narada, accepting the order of the parents, both of them went to the king and there, by progressing their knowledge, they received money from the king. When they were about to return home, the king said to them, O Brahmin sons, we will give you a gift. He tells a way to get more wealth. Listen, the way is that king Chitrananda of Madhya Desh and his queen Seemawanti observe fast every Monday and give donations to Brahmins and feed them along with their women. You should go to their place in such a way that one of you takes the form of a woman and the other becomes her husband. After doing this, when they get money from there, then you have to come back to our house. On hearing the words of the king, those Brahmin sons got very scared and replied, “O king, we do not need such wealth, so we are unable to follow your order. Please do not preach us to go against religion. O Narada.” On hearing this, the king gave the proof of Vedas and said to those boys, “Brahmin sons, we are telling you according to the Vedas that it is not right to disrespect the orders of God, Guru, parents and king. Whether that order is right or wrong, it is the duty of all men to follow them.” Both of them accepted the order of the king. Then Samvan became the woman’s lover and Sumer became her husband and went to king Chitrananda. He reached in the evening to worship Shiva. In the morning when the king and queen started donating all the Brahmins with its leaves knowing them to be the form of Shiva Parvati, then Sumer and Samadhan also appeared in front of them as husband and wife. At that time queen Simavanti Samant laughed a lot on seeing her as a loving woman. Still the king and queen knowing them to be the form of Gauri Shankar, after worshipping and having food etc. and giving a lot of dakshina, sent them off from there. After leaving from there, when both the Brahmin sons went towards their home and reached a van in the middle, at that time the same feelings arose in the heart of Saman in the form of a woman, just like the sexual urge arises in the heart of a woman, in that condition she addressed Sumer and said, see how suitable this forest is for enjoying pleasures, come let us both have sex here. Hearing Saman's words, Sumer understood that he is laughing, today you are going to mate. He started moving ahead smiling without giving any answer. After walking some distance more, Saman in the form of a woman again with sexual urge like before said, husband, I am feeling very sad because of the hairs of Kamadeva, why don't you have sex with me? So unless you stay with me I will not be able to move ahead, so you fulfill my desire. On hearing these words, when Sumertha looked back, she found that in reality Samana has transformed into a very beautiful woman and lust is coming out of his eyes. Then she addressed him and said, Samana, you are a Veda scholar, celibate, sinless Brahma, son of Brahma. Then why are you saying such things to me, O Narada. On hearing these words of Sumedha, Shamvan, who had actually become a woman by that time, said, husband, if you do not believe me, then look at my private parts. From that you will come to know that you are not a man but a woman. On hearing this, Suvidha was very surprised and when he looked at her body parts, it did not take long to know that in reality Samana's statement is true. Seeing this surprise, he was stunned and started meditating on Lord Shiva. Then this woman said again, young man, I am very much tormented by the thought of lust. You fulfill my desire. Then Sumedha replied, Brother, we both are Brahmin sons of a strong party. At this time, you will definitely get the form of a woman, but to get freedom from this, you should meditate on Shiv Girija. King Vibhav has saved us from his clutches. If we do not act according to his story, then such a calamity would never have come. If even then you remain a woman, then I will take it from my father and make you my wife. Saying this, Sumedha praised the magic of Lord Shiva and the effect of the fast of Queen Seemavanti in her mind. O Narada, in this way, Sumedha explained a lot to the female form feudal lord, but being under the influence of lust, he did not listen to even a single thing. He forcibly took the convenience to the deed. Thereafter, both reached home. Seeing the whole situation, the father of both became very angry and went near the king of the country and while addressing him, he said, O king, why did you make our daughters do such a bad deed that one of these children became a woman. Now how can we get freedom from within us?It will be possible. Apart from this child, there is no other child in our clan. Saraswat Brahmin fell on the earth in this debt to the king. Then the king, seeing Saman in the form of a woman, replied with great devotion in his mind, "Brother Brahmin, I never thought that your child will actually become a woman. I had told you such a trick only to earn more money. You tell me such a way by which the womanly feelings of this child will go away. O Narada. On hearing this, Brahmins said to the king, "O King, you should worship Lord Shiva in your heart and find a way to free our child from him." On hearing this, the king along with his queen started worshipping Shiva Girija. He pleased Shiva Girija by many ways and Girija Ji appeared and asked the king to ask for a boon. At that time, the king while praying to her said, "O Bhagwati, I want that the son of Saraswat Brahmin who has become a woman will again become a man." On hearing this prayer of the king, Bhagwati Girija replied, "O King, we do not want to give any kind of order to your devotee. Today, we have asked you to do something for your son." I am saying that you should get the boy married to Sumedha. After saying this, when Girija went into meditation, the king called both the Brahmins and narrated the entire story. On hearing that, Shashwat married his son to Sumedha. Then both of them became husband and wife and started living happily. By the grace of Goddess Girija, the Brahmins got a second son at the same time. You have to tell about this direct miracle of the glory of the Monday fast that was observed by Queen Narad in Mohti. Whoever listens to or reads this story also gets happiness in both the worlds.
