ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा हे नारद अब मैं तुम्हें वार्षिक व्रत के संबंध में सुनाता हूं उन्हें धारण करने से प्रति को सब प्रकार के आनंद प्राप्त होते हैं तथा अंत में मुक्ति प्राप्त होकर शिवजी का समीप लाभ होता है वार्षिक व्रत में एक व्रत उमा महेश्वर नाम से प्रसिद्ध है उमा महेश्वर व्रत सहित तथा मांग शीर्ष मास के शुक्ल पक्ष के अष्टमी चतुर्दशी पूर्णिमा अथवा अमावस्या को करना चाहिए इस व्रत का नियम यह है कि प्रातः काल उठकर संकल्प करें तदुपरांत नित्य कर्म आदि से निर्मित होकर नदी में स्नान करें फिर अपने घर में आकर श्रेष्ठ मंडप तथा पांच कलशो की स्थापना करें कलश को शुद्ध वस्त्र से ढके तथा उसके ऊपर शिव तथा गिरजा की स्वर्ण प्रतिमा स्थापित करें प्रतिमा में शिव जी का स्वरूप सॉन्ग चक्र गदा पद्म युक्त तथा गिरजा का स्वरूप वस्त्र आभूषण से युक्त होना चाहिए तत्पश्चात विधि पूर्वक उनका पूजन तथा हवन करके पांच अक्षरी मंत्र का जाप करना चाहिए हे नारद प्रदोष काल में शिव जी का दूसरा पूजन करके ब्राह्मणों को शक्ति लिगन भजन कारण तथा उन्हें दान दक्षिणा आदि से संतुष्ट करें तब प्रांत स्वयं दूध सहित मीठा भोजन कारण इस प्रकार एक वर्ष तक दोनों पक्ष में इस व्रत को धारण करता रहे जो लोग इस विधि से उमा महेश्वर का व्रत को धारण करते हैं उसकी तीन पीढ़ियां तार जाती है ऐसे लोग को संसार में सुख तथा परलोक में शिव जी का शमी प्राप्त होता है इस संबंध में हम तुमसे एक कथा कहते हैं हे नारद प्राचीन काल में वेदर नामक एक ब्राह्मण आंध्र प्रदेश में रहा करता था वह ब्राह्मण अत्यंत धनवान बलवान तथा बूटी मन था उसके अनेक संताने थी जिनमें शारदा नामक एक कन्या बड़ी पंडित थी जबकि वह कन्या 12 वर्ष की हुई तब एक अन्य धनवान वृत्त ब्राह्मण ने भेदभाव के पास जाकर यह कहा कि तुम अपनी पुत्री का विवाह हमारे साथ कर दो वह ब्राह्मण राजा का मित्र था वस्तु उसकी मांग सुनकर विभव पहले तो बहुत चिंतित हुआ परंतु अंत में यह विचार करके की इस मांग को आशीर्वाद करने पर राजा भी उनके विरोध हो जाएगा उसने शारदा का विवाह उसे बूढ़े ब्राह्मण के साथ कर दिया हे नारद मध्यकाल में तो विवाह हुआ और उसी दिन स्वयं कल में जब वह ब्राह्मण नदी के तट से संध्या करके लौट रहा था मार्ग में सर्प के काट लेने से उसकी मृत्यु हो गई यह देखकर दोनों कल के लोग अत्यंत दुखी हुए परंतु विधि के विधान में परिवर्तन करना समर्थ की बात ना जानकर धैर्य धारण कर चुप हो गए शारदा विधवा होकर अपने माता-पिता के घर रहने लगी जब कुछ समय व्यतीत हो गया तब एक दिन या घटना घटी शारदा के पिता तथा भाई किसी स्थान पर विवाह में सम्मिलित होने के लिए आए हुए थे उनके लौटकर आने से पूर्व ही अंधे हुए धूल मुनि अपने शिष्यों का हाथ पकड़े हुए सदा के घर जा पहुंचे शारदा ने उसकी अत्यंत सेवा की कथा भोजन कराया उसे समय में धूप मुनि ने उसे वरदान देते हुए यह कहा के सहारे तुम्हें अपने पति के द्वारा एक पुत्र की प्राप्ति होगी तथा देवताओं की कृपा से बड़ा बालक बड़ा धर्मात्मा होगा मुनि किया वचन सुनकर शारदा ने अत्यंत चकित हो हाथ जोड़कर इस प्रकार कहा हे प्रभु मेरे पति की मृत्यु तो विवाह के दिन ही हो गए थे आज तो आप मुझे या बताएं कि आपका कथन किस प्रकार सत्य होगा हे नारद शारदा की मुख से यह शब्द सुनकर विद्युत मुनि ने कहा है पुत्री नेत्रहीन होने के कारण मैं तुम्हें बिना देखे ही ऐसा वर दे बैठा हूं फिर भी मैं भगवान सदाशिव को प्रसन्न करके आपके वचन को सत्य करूंगा तुम भी मेरी आज्ञा मानकर उमा महेश्वर व्रत को धारण करो मुनि के यह वचन सुनकर शारदा अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए उसके उत्तर दिए मैं आपकी आज्ञा अनुसार उमा महेश्वर का व्रत अवश्य धारण करुंगी या सुनकर मुनि ने उसे प्राप्त की विधि बतला दी इस समय शारदा के पिता तथा भाई भी लौटकर घर आए उन्होंने जब सब प्रीतम सुना तो मनी से इस प्रकार बोले हे प्रभु आपने अत्यंत कृपा की जो यहां आकर हमें अपना दर्शन दिया हमारी यह पुत्री आपकी शरण में है अब आप कृपा करके यही शिवालय में निवास कीजिए जब इसका व्रत समाप्त हो जाए तब आप जहां चाहे वहां चले जाएंगे परंतु उसे समय तक यही निवास कीजिए वधू मुनि ने इस प्रार्थना को स्वीकार कर लिया तब शारदा उसके बताए अनुसार उमा महेश्वर का व्रत रखने लगी और वह उसे उपदेश करते रहे

Brahma Ji said, O Narada, now I will tell you about the annual fast. By observing them, one gets all kinds of happiness and finally gets salvation and gets the benefit of being close to Lord Shiva. Among the annual fasts, one fast is famous by the name of Uma Maheshwar. Along with Uma Maheshwar fast, one should do it on Ashtami Chaturdashi Poornima or Amavasya of the Shukla Paksh of the month of Mangshirsha. The rule of this fast is that one should wake up in the morning and take a resolution. After that, after completing the daily chores etc., take a bath in the river. Then come to your house and establish a good pavilion and five urns. Cover the urns with a pure cloth and place the golden idol of Shiva and Girja on it. The form of Shiva in the idol should be with song, chakra, mace and lotus and the form of Girja should be with clothes and ornaments. After that, one should worship them according to the rituals and perform havan and chant the five-syllable mantra. O Narada, after performing the second worship of Lord Shiva in Pradosh Kaal, satisfy the Brahmins with Shakti Ligan Bhajan and give them charity, Dakshina etc. Then the person himself should eat sweet food along with milk. In this way, observe this fast in both the fortnights for a year. Those who observe the fast of Uma Maheshwar in this manner, their three generations are saved. Such people get happiness in this world and Shiva's blessings in the next world. In this regard, we tell you a story. O Narada, in ancient times, a Brahmin named Vedar used to live in Andhra Pradesh. That Brahmin was very rich, strong and wise. He had many children, among whom a daughter named Sharda was very learned. When the girl was 12 years old, then another rich Brahmin went to Vibhav and said that you should marry your daughter to us. That Brahmin was a friend of the king. On hearing his demand, Vibhav was very worried at first, but in the end, thinking that if this demand is granted, the king will also oppose him, he got Sharda married to the old Brahmin. O Narada, the marriage took place in the middle and on the same day, when that Brahmin was returning after doing evening prayers from the river bank, he died due to snake bite on the way. Seeing this, the people of both the clans became very sad, but knowing that it was not possible to change the law of law, they kept patience and kept patience. Sharda became quiet. After becoming a widow, she started living in her parents' house. Some time passed and then one day this incident happened. Sharda's father and brother had gone to some place to attend a marriage. Before they could return, Dhul Muni, who had become blind, reached Sada's house holding the hand of his disciples. Sharda served him very well and fed him. Dhul Muni gave her a boon and said that she will get a son from her husband and by the grace of the gods, the elder son will be a very pious person. Hearing the words of the Muni, Sharda was very surprised and said with folded hands, "O Lord, my husband had died on the day of the marriage itself. Today, please tell me how your statement will come true." Hearing these words from Sharda's mouth, Vidyut Muni said, "Daughter, being blind, I have given you such a boon without seeing you. Still, I will please Lord Sadashiv and make your word come true. You also obey my command and observe the Uma Maheshwar fast." Hearing these words of the Muni, Sharda was very happy and replied, "I am your command." According to this I will certainly observe the fast of Uma Maheshwar. On hearing this the muni told her the method to attain it. At this time Sharda's father and brother also came back home. When they heard all this they said to Mani in this way. O Prabhu you have been very kind to us by coming here and giving us your darshan, this daughter of ours is in your refuge, now kindly stay in this Shivalaya only. When her fast is over then you can go wherever you want but till that time stay here only. Muni accepted this request, then Sharda started observing the fast of Uma Maheshwar as per his advice and he kept on advising her.
