गंगा जी की महिमा राजा परीक्षित को संबोधित करते हुए महात्मा सुखदेव जी बोले हे राजन् जब पावनी गंगा किस प्रकार अवतरित हुई वह कथा आपको सुनाता हूं ध्यान लगाकर सुनो एक बार प्रभु श्री हरिनारायण ने वामन अवतार धारण कर राजा बलि से तीन पग धरती दान में ली और अपने स्वरूप का विस्तार कर एक पार्क में साथ वह लोग ऊपर दूसरे पार्क में सातों लोग नीचे नाप लिया और तीसरे पद पर उन्होंने अपना चरण बड़ा या तो उसका डैनी चरण ब्रम्हपुरी में पहुंच गया ब्रह्मा जी ने त्रिविक्रम अवतार जान कर अपना हसन त्याग कर उठ खड़े हुए प्रभु श्री नारायण के नाम से ब्रह्मा पुरी का ऊपरी भाग कट गया और उत्पन्न हुए चीन से एक जल धारा बहने लगी श्री नारायण के चरण कमल की केसर मिश्रित होने से जलधारा लाल रंग की हो गई इससे उसका नाम भागवती एवं तत्पश्चात 700 वर्षों बीत जाने पर ध्रुव लोक में आए वहां उसका नाम विष्णु पद दी हुई ध्रुव लोक आकाश से होकर चंद्र मंडल से गुजरती हुई सातों मंडल को तृप्त करते हुए सुमेरु पर्वत के शिखर पर पहुंचे और 4 धाराओं में बैठ गई और सीता अलकानंद चज्जू तथा भद्रा नाम से जाने लगे सुमेरु पर्वत के पूर्व की तरफ जाने वाली धारा युव विद खंडों को छोड़ती हुई गंगोत्री से होकर भरतखंड तक आई वहीं धारा जगत में गंगा जी के नाम से विख्यात हुई अलकानंद नदी दक्षिण की तरफ से निकलकर हेमकुंठ पर्वत पर गिरती है सीता नदी ब्रह्मा पुरी से निकलकर गंधमादान पर्वत के शिखर पर गिरती है और चाचू नदी माल वन पर्वत पर गिरकर केतु बाल खंड को खींचती हुई पश्चिम की ओर खारे पानी के समुद्र में गिरती है हे राजन गंगा जी की ऐसी महिमा है कि जो कोई मनुष्य गंगा स्नान के उद्देश्य से घर से निकलता है उसके कई जन्मों के पाप कट जाते हैं और जीतने पर चलकर गंगाजी तक पहुंचता है उससे उसने अश्वमेध यज्ञ के फल प्राप्त होते हैं श्री सुखदेव जी के वचनों को सुनकर राजा परीक्षित बोले हैं महात्मा जब गंगा स्नान से कई जन्मों के पाप कट जाते हैं तो फिर हमारे दादा महाराज युधिष्ठिर ने बहुत सारा धन व्यय करके किस लिए यज्ञ किया तब श्री सुखदेव जी बोले हैं राजन हम तुम्हें महादेव शंकर और पार्वती जी की कथा सुनाते हैं एक बार त्रिपुरारी शंकर और पार्वती जी मांग मां के मकर स्नान हेतु प्रयागराज जा रहे थे राम पार्वती जी ने गंगा स्नान का महत्व पूछा तब शिव जी कहने लगे हे शैलपुत्री गंगा स्नान का संकल्प करके जो मनुष्य घर से निकलता है उसके कई जन्मों के पाप कट जाते हैं शिव जी के मुख से निकले वचनों को सुनकर पार्वती जी के मन में संयम बना रहे कि लाखों नीच जाति वाले गंगा स्नान करके जा रहे हैं फिर भी इनके टंकी कुरूपता ज्यों की त्यों है किस तरह देव तुल्य शरीर की प्राप्ति नहीं होगी ऐसा विचार कर वह शिवजी से बोलिए स्वामी आप मेरा शंका का समाधान करो तब अंतर्यामी त्रिनेत्र प्रभु शिवजी भोले के शैलपुत्री मैं तुम्हें गंगा जी की महिमा का क्या बखान करूं तुम स्वयं शर्करा अपनी आंखों से देखो और स्वयं को ही का रूप बंद करें कि स्थान पर बैठ जाओ और देव देवी पार्वती अपना दिव्य रूप धारण कर शिवजी के शरीर पर बैठने वाले पक्षयों को उड़ाने लगे किसी के पूछने पर कहते हैं कि इसके कर्म लेख में लिखा है कि जिस मनुष्य ने अश्वमेध यज्ञ किया हो यदि वह मनुष्य स्पर्श कर देते तो इसका कोड ठीक हो जाएगा देवकन्या की स्नान पार्वती का सुंदर तन देख कर कहा बहुत से लोग खड़े हो गए कोई कहता है इस्त्री तुम मेरे साथ चलो मैं तुम्हें सुख पूर्वक रखूंगा इस कोड के साथ क्यों अपना जीवन नष्ट कर रही हो कोई हंसी ठोकर कराता किंतु ज्ञानी और महात्मा लोग कहते कि यह स्त्री धन्य हैं जो इस बुरे अवस्था में पति को परमेश्वर मानकर सेवा कर रही है और पराए पुरुष की तरफ देखती भी नहीं ऐसी पवित्रता इस्त्री धन्य है वह ऐसी बातें हो रही थी कि एक कंगाल ब्राह्मण वहां आ पहुंचा और पार्वती के पास आकर प्रणाम कर के पश्चात बोला है माता तुम किस उद्देश्य से यहां बैठे हो मख्खी आदि के बैठने से आपके पतिदेव को अति कष्ट हो रहा होगा अच्छा होता कि तुम इन्हें किसी एकांत स्थल पर ले जाओ तब पार्वती जी बोली है ब्राह्मण देव मेरे पति के कर्म लेख में लिखा है कि यदि ऐसा मनुष्य जो सब अश्वमेध यज्ञ हो आकर इस पर कर दे तो इसका को समाप्त हो जाएगा यह सुनकर ब्राम्हण प्रसन्न होकर बोला हे माता यह कौन सी बड़ी बात है सबसुमेद तो क्या लाखों अश्वमेध यज्ञ संपन्न कर चुका हूं यह सुनकर पार्वती जी विनती करते हुए बोली हे ब्राह्मण ते हो आप मुझ पर दया करके मेरे स्वामी को स्पर्श कर दीजिए ब्राम्हण ने वैसा ही किया उसकी स्पर्श करते ही शिव ज को दिव्य रूप प्राप्त हो गया इस घटना को देखकर वह उपस्थित जनों को महान आश्चर्य हुआ और विराज ने लगे कि इस ब्राह्मण की आयु अभी 30 वर्ष से कम होगी किंतु कम उम्र में 100 वर्षों में मेथी यज्ञ किस प्रकार किए होंगे यात्रियों के मन में बात जानकर अंतर्यामी शिवजी भोले हे विप्र देव आपने 30 वर्ष की अल्पायु में इस प्रकार से योगियों को पूर्ण किया शिव जी के वचनों को सुनकर ब्राम्हण कहने लगे हे महाराज शास्त्रों में लिखा है कि गंगा स्नान के लिए घर से पैदल चलने पर एक एक पक्का पुणे साव अश्वमेध यज्ञ के बराबर होता है और मैं प्रतिदिन हजारों पैदल चलकर गंगा स्नान के लिए आता हूं इस तरह लाख हूं क्या करोड़ों अश्वमेध यज्ञ को मैं पूर्ण कर चुका हूं इसमें आश्चर्य की कोई बात नहीं है ब्राह्मण का कथन सुनकर मुस्कुराते हुए बोला भोला शंकर अपनी प्रिया को साथ लेकर कैलाश पर्वत की ओर तरफ चल दिए मार्ग में पार्वती से बोले हे पार्वती ब्राम्हण को वेद शास्त्रों पर विश्वास था इसलिए गंगा स्नान कर पूर्ण उसे प्राप्त हुआ इतनी कथा सुनकर श्री सुखदेव जी राजा परीक्षित से बोले हे राजन् तुम्हारे पिता मां धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर को वेद शास्त्रों पर विश्वास था किंतु उनके मन में श्री वासुदेव के साथ सत्संग करने की अत्याधिक अभिलाषा थी इसलिए उन्होंने राज सूर्य यज्ञ किया
