ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा हे नारद अब हम मल्लिका अर्जुन शिवलिंग का वृतांत सुनो जी समय शिव जी के पुत्र इस कांजी संसार की परिक्रमा करके कैलाश पर्वत पर आए उसे समय तुमने उन्हें गणपति के अधिकार का भी प्रधान का सुनाया तब स्कंद अत्यंत दुखी हो अपने माता-पिता को प्रणाम करने के उपरांत ऑपरेशन होकर पहुंची गिरी को चले गए यद्यपि शिव गिरिजा ने उन्हें बहुत समझाया परंतु उन्होंने किसी भी प्रकार का इलाज पर रहना स्वीकार नहीं किया यह नारद उसे समय गिरिजा ने पुत्र वियोग में बहुत विलाप किया तब शिवजी ने गिरजा को धैर्य बनते हुए यह कहा है गिरजा तुम चिंता मत करो तुम्हारा पुत्र सीख रही तुम्हारे पास लौट आएगा यह सुनकर फिर जा बोली हे प्रभु आप आप देवताओं आदि को मेरे पुत्र को मनाने के लिए भेजिए यदि वहां यह नहीं आया तो हम और आप स्वयं ही उसके पास चलकर रहेंगे गिरजा को इस प्रकार दुखी देखकर शिवजी ने देवताओं तथा मुनियों हु इस गांधी के पास भेजा परंतु स्थान की किस प्रकार लौट कर नहीं आए जब यह समाचार शिव गिरिजा को मिला तो वह पुत्र वियोग से व्याकुल हो स्वयं ही उनके पास चल दिए जिस समय इसका जीने अपने माता-पिता के आगमन का समाचार सुना तो वह अपने स्थान से तीन योजन दूर है कर चल गए ताकि उसने भेंट न हो सके इस गांधी के ऐसे है को देखकर शिव गिरजा भी उसके पास नहीं गए और ज्योति स्वरूप होकर इस स्थान पर स्थिर हो गए हे नारद वही ज्योतिर्लिंग मल्लिका अर्जुन के नाम से संसार में प्रसिद्ध है प्रत्येक वर्ष में शिव गिरिजा अपने पुत्र से भेंट करने के हेतु स्थान पर जाया करते हैं प्रत्येक 15 दिन शिव तथा प्रत्येक पूर्णिमा मासी को गिरजा वहां आती है परंतु उन दोनों में से कोई वहां सदैव के लिए नहीं चाहता बालिका अर्जुन शिवलिंग 12 ज्योतिर्लिंग में से दूसरा है इसके दर्शन करने से सब प्रकार के आनंद प्राप्त होते हैं उसकी महिमा तीनों लोकों में प्रकट है इस कथा को पढ़ने सुनने से भी सब प्रकार का आनंद प्राप्त होता है

Brahma Ji said, O Narada, now listen to the story of Mallika Arjun Shivling. When Shiv Ji's son came to Kailash mountain after circumambulating the Kanji world, at that time you also told him about the rights of Ganapati. Then Skanda became very sad and after paying obeisance to his parents, after the operation, went to Pari Giri. Although Shiv Girija explained him a lot, but he did not agree to undergo any kind of treatment. Narada said, at that time Girija mourned a lot in the separation of her son. Then Shiv Ji, while being patient, told Girja that Girja, you do not worry, your son will come back to you. Hearing this, she said, O Lord, you send the Gods etc. to persuade my son. If he does not come there, then you and I ourselves will go to him. Seeing Girja sad like this, Shiv Ji sent Gods and sages to this temple, but they did not return from the place. When Shiv Girija got this news, he became distraught with the separation of his son and himself went to them. When he got the news of his parents' arrival, he himself went to them. On hearing this, he went three yojanas away from his place so that he could not meet him. On seeing such a person like Gandhi, even Shiv and Girija did not go near him, and became stable at that place in the form of light. O Narad, that same Jyotirlinga is famous in the world by the name of Mallika Arjun. Every year Shiv and Girija visit the place to meet their son. Shiv comes there every 15 days and Girija comes there on every full moon day, but neither of them wants to go there forever. Mallika Arjun Shivling is the second one out of the 12 Jyotirlingas. By seeing it, one gets all kinds of bliss. Its glory is revealed in all the three worlds. By reading and listening to this story, one gets all kinds of bliss.
