ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा हे पुत्र उज्जैनी नगरी में एक शिव भक्त ब्राह्मण रहा करता था वह सदैव भस्म धारण करता रुद्राक्ष पहना शिवजी के नाम का स्मरण करता तथा उन्हें की निष्कामना भक्ति में सरनागण रहता था उसे ब्राह्मण के चार पुत्र थे जिसका नाम इस प्रकार है देवप्रिया प्रिया मेघ सुकृत तथा धर्म वादी के चारों लड़के भी शिव जी के परम भक्त थे हे नारद उन्हीं दिनों भूषण नामक एक कसूर अत्यंत बलवान तथा तीनों लोक को दुख देने वाला उत्पन्न हुआ वह अपने पत्नी सहित रतन माला गिरी पर निवास करता था उसने मेरी तपस्या करके अपार बलशाली होने का वरदान प्राप्त किया दादू प्रांत उसने अत्यंत अहंकार में भरकर सभी देवताओं को जीत लिया और इस पर्वत पर रहकर तीनों लोक का राज करने लगा उसने सब धर्म मिटा कर अनेक प्रकार के पाप फैले तथा देवता ऋषि मुनि ब्रह्मण आदि को बहुत कष्ट पहुंचा उसे समय सब देवता और ऋषि मुनि मेरे पास आकर इस प्रकार कहने लगे है ब्राह्मण आप इस डेट से हमारी रक्षा करने का उपाय करें तब मैंने उन्हें संबोधित करते हुए कहा है देवताओं मैंने उसे देखते को व दिया है आज तो मैं उसका आकर नहीं करूंगा है हे नारद इतना कह कर मैं सब देवता तथा मुनियों को साथ ले शिवजी के समीप जा पहुंचा तथा उसे दंडवत स्तुति करने को प्रात बोला है प्रभु दूसरा नामक नृत्य संसार में बहुत उपद्रव मचा रहा है आप असुर को नाश करने में प्रसिद्ध है आज तो हम लोग आप कृपा करके आप आप उसका शीघ्र संघार कीजिए हमारी प्रार्थना को सुनकर शिवजी ने कहा है देवताओं तुम लोग अपने-अपने स्थान को लौट जाओ हम उसे असुर का नाश कर देंगे जब वह असुर हमारे उज्जैनी निवासी भक्त ब्राह्मण तथा उसके पुत्रों को कष्ट पहुंचाएगी तब हम उसे मार डालेंगे शिवजी किया आ गया सुनकर सब लोग अपने अपने स्थान को लौट गए हे नारद कुछ समय बाद शिवजी की माया से दूषण के मन मे यह विचार उत्पन्न हुआ कि मुझे शिव भक्तों तथा देवताओं को दुख पहुंचाना चाहिए तब वह स्वयं एक विशाल सी लेकर शिव भक्तों का वध करने के नियमित उज्जैन में जा पहुंचा क्योंकि उसने यह सुना था कि उज्जैनी पुरी में बहुत से शिव भक्त निवास करते हैं वहां पहुंचकर उसने पूरी को चारों ओर से घेर लिया तथा सब लोगों को दुख पहुंचाना आरंभ कर दिया उसके उपग्रह को देखकर जब लोग व्याकुल लोग अपना घर छोड़कर बाहर को भेज तो असुर ने उन्हें पकड़ कर मार डाला हे नारद उसे देते के उपग्रहों को देखकर भी शिव जी के भक्त अपने स्थान से हटकर बाहर नहीं निकले क्योंकि वह उन्हें या विश्वास था कि शिवजी हमारे सहायता एवं रक्षा करेंगे यह देखकर वह असुर शिव भक्तों के स्थान पर पहुंच उन्हें मार डालने के लिए अपने असुरों को आज्ञा देने लगा शिवजी के भक्त को उसे समय भी कोई चिंता नहीं हुई तब शिवजी ने यह चरित्र किया कि उसे स्थान पर शिव भक्त ब्राह्मण बैठे हुए आर्थिक पूजा कर रहे थे उसके चारों ओर की पृथ्वी अचानक ही फट गई और वहां एक भारी गड्ढा हो गया उसे समय पृथ्वी फटने से ऐसा महा भयानक शब्द हुआ जिसको सुनकर तीनों लोग कांपने लगे उसे दृश्य को देखकर भी दूषण को कोई चिंता नहीं हुई और वह घंटे के भीतर घुस कर ब्राह्मणों के पास जा पहुंचा उसे समय शिव जी वहां प्रकट हो गए और अत्यंत क्रुद्ध में भरकर दूषण से इस प्रकार करने लगे अरे मूर्ख हम अपने भक्तों के रक्षक हैं हम महाकाल हैं इसलिए उचित है कि अब तू अपने भाव आगे मत बढ़ाना शिव जी के मुख से क्या वचन सुन भी वह देते नहीं माना असुर नहीं माना और कुछ आगे को बढ़ा तो इस समय शिव जी ने एक जोर की ओंकार भारी जिससे महा भयानक अग्नि प्रकट हुआ दूसरा असुर अपने साथियों सहित उसे आदमी में जलकर भस्म हो गया हे नारद उसे समय शिव जी के दर्शन पाकर वह ब्राह्मण अपने चारों पुत्रों सहित अत्यंत प्रसन्न हो स्तुति करने लगा देवताओं ने दूर भी बजाई तथा आकाश में पुष्प वर्ष हुई सब लोग उच्च स्वर में शिव जी की स्तुति करने लगे तथा दो प्रांत उसे ब्राह्मण ने शिवजी की प्रार्थना करते हुए कहा हे प्रभु आपने यह प्रगट होकर अपने भक्तों को कृतार्थ कर दिया आप मेरी यह अभिलाषा है कि आप इसी गति में गिरिजा जी तथा अपने गानों सहित स्थित हो यह दूसरा असुर नमक दैत्य असुर संसार के लिए कल स्वरूप था अतः आप उसको नष्ट करने वाले महाकाल हैं आप इस महाकाल के नाम से संसार में प्रसिद्ध हो आपकी पूजा करने वाले अपने सभी मनोरथ को प्राप्त किया करें हे नारद ब्राह्मण की इस प्रार्थना को शिव जी ने स्वीकार कर लिया तब वह ब्राह्मण द्वारा स्थापित लिंग मूर्ति में अपने पूर्णांस द्वारा महाकाल नाम से स्थित हुए उसे समय उसे ब्राह्मण तथा उसके पुत्रों ने मैं विष्णु जी ने तथा अन्य सब देवताओं एवं ऋषि मुनियों ने महाकाल ज्योतिर्लिंग का पूजन किया तब प्राण सब लोग अपने-अपने लोग को चले गए इस कथा को जो कोई सुनता अथवा सुनता है उसे भी अत्यंत आनंद प्राप्त होता है

Brahma Ji said, O son, there used to be a Shiva devotee Brahmin in the city of Ujjaini. He always wore ashes, wore Rudraksha, remembered the name of Shiva and lived in devotion to him without any expectation. That Brahmin had four sons whose names are Devpriya, Priya Megh, Sukrit and Dharmwadi. All the four sons were also great devotees of Shiva. O Narada, in those days, a very powerful person named Bhushan was born and he lived on Ratan Mala Giri with his wife. He did my penance and got the boon of being immensely powerful. Dadu Prant, filled with great arrogance, won over all the gods and started ruling the three worlds by living on this mountain. He destroyed all the religions and spread many types of sins and caused a lot of pain to the gods, sages, Brahmins etc. At that time, all the gods and sages came to me and said, Brahmin, you should find a way to protect us from this demon. Then I addressed them and said, Gods, I have seen him and given him food. Today, I will not come to him. O Narada, saying this much. I took all the Gods and sages with me and went to Shiva and asked them to bow down and praise him. Lord, the second dance called Dusara is creating a lot of disturbance in the world. You are famous for destroying demons. Today, please destroy him quickly. On hearing our prayers, Shiva said, Gods, you all go back to your respective places. We will destroy that demon. When that demon troubles our devotee Brahmin and his sons living in Ujjain, then we will kill him. On hearing what Shiva said, everyone went back to their respective places. O Narada. After some time, due to Shiva's illusion, Dushan got the idea in his mind that he should trouble Shiva's devotees and Gods. Then he himself took a huge chariot and reached Ujjain to kill Shiva's devotees. He had heard that many Shiva's devotees live in Ujjain Puri. On reaching there, he surrounded the Puri from all sides and started to trouble everyone. On seeing his applause, when the people left their houses and went outside, the demon caught them and killed them. O Narada, even after seeing the satellites of Shiva, the devotees of Lord Shiva did not move out of their place because they had faith that Lord Shiva will help and protect them. Seeing this, the demon reached the place of the devotees of Shiva and started ordering his demons to kill them. The devotee of Lord Shiva did not have any worry at that time. Then Lord Shiva did this act that at that place, the devotee of Shiva, Brahmins were sitting and performing Aarthik Puja. The earth around them suddenly burst and a huge crater was formed there. At that time, due to the bursting of the earth, such a terrible sound was made that all the three people started trembling. Even after seeing that scene, Dushan did not have any worry and he went inside the cave and reached the Brahmins. At that time, Lord Shiva appeared there and in a very angry mood, started saying to Dushan, hey fool, we are the protectors of our devotees. We are Mahakaal, therefore, it is appropriate that now you do not take your intentions further. Even after hearing the words from the mouth of Lord Shiva, the demon did not listen and moved a little forward, then at this time Lord Shiva uttered a loud Omkar, which made Mahakaal. A terrible fire appeared. The second demon along with his companions burnt to ashes. O Narada, on getting the darshan of Lord Shiva, the Brahmin along with his four sons became very happy and started praising him. The gods also played drums and flowers rained in the sky. Everyone started praising Lord Shiva in a loud voice. The Brahmin prayed to Lord Shiva and said, O Lord, by appearing here, you have fulfilled the wishes of your devotees. It is my desire that you remain in this state along with Goddess Parvati and your companions. This second demon named Asura was the form of death for the world. Therefore, you are Mahakaal, the one who destroyed him. You should become famous in the world by the name of Mahakaal. Those who worship you, may get all their wishes fulfilled. O Narada, Lord Shiva accepted this prayer of the Brahmin. Then he became situated in the Linga idol established by the Brahmin with his full breath and named Mahakaal. At that time, the Brahmin and his sons, Lord Vishnu and all other gods and sages worshipped Mahakaal Jyotirling. Then everyone got their souls back. People have gone crazy over this story and whoever listens to it also gets immense pleasure
