श्री शिव महापुराण कथा आठवां खंड अध्याय 27

ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा हे नारद मेरा पुत्र इस महबूब मानव अत्यंत प्रतापी हुआ उसने मनुस्मृति बनाकर धर्म नीति संबंधित संपूर्ण विवादों को दूर कर दिया उसने तीन कन्या तथा दो पुत्रों को जन्म दिया जिनके द्वारा बहुत सी संताने हुई उसके एक पुत्र का नाम उत्पन्न तथा दूसरे का नाम प्रिया व्रत था प्रिया व्रत में अपने रात पर चढ़कर सूर्य के समान समस्त संसार का भ्रमण किया तथा शब्दों एवं समुद्र का विभाजन किया उसके घर से साथ पुत्र उत्पन्न हुए तब उसने मेरी आज्ञा अनुसार अपने सातों पुत्रों को एक-एक दीप का स्वामी बना दिया और स्वयं शिवजी की सेवा में सारनाथ ना होकर परम पद को प्राप्त किया उनका सबसे बड़ा लड़का अजीम नमक था वह जानम दीप का स्वामी बना अंजित नाम नाभिक नामक पुत्र की उत्पत्ति हुई नाभिक ने इस श्रपों देव को जन्म दिया इसरार हो देव के 100 पुत्र उत्पन्न हुए जिनमें सबसे बड़े पुत्र का नाम भारत था भरत चक्रवर्ती राजा हुआ नाभिक अन्य पुत्रों में से नव बालक तुम्हारी समझी मानकर योगी हो गए तथा 81 बालक सिद्ध हुए हे नारद भारत तीनों लोकों में अत्यंत तेजस्वी हुई इसके जितने बालक थे हुए जिस जिस खंड के राजा हुआ वह वह उन्हें के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुआ इस राहु मनु की आकृति नमक बड़ी पुत्री का विवाह रुचि नमक मुनि के साथ हुआ था रुचि ने संतान प्राप्ति के हेतु विष्णु जी का बड़ा तप किया जब विष्णु जी ने दर्शन देकर उसने वरदान मांगने के लिए कहा तब रुचि ने उनसे यह प्रार्थना की की है प्रभु माय अपने सामान पुत्र चाहता हूं विष्णु जी उसकी प्रार्थना स्वीकार कर अंतर ध्यान हो गए ता दो प्रांत विष्णु जी ने स्वयं ही आकृति के उधर से दो रूप में जन्म लिया उन दोनों बालकों का नाम न और नारायण रखा गया रुचि तथा आकृति ने उन दोनों का विष्णु का अवतार जानकर दीक्षा दी तदुपरांत हुए दोनों नर और नारायण तपस्या करने के हेतु हिमाचल पर्वत पर पहुंच हिमाचल की जो शाखा केदार नाम से प्रसिद्ध है वह दोनों ने अत्यंत कठिन तप किया वह शिवजी का पार्थिव पूजन तथा अखंड ध्यान धरती रहते थे तब शिवजी ने प्रसन्न होकर उन्हें अपना दर्शन दिया हे नारद नर नारायण ने उनकी बहुत स्तुति की तथा यह कहा है प्रभु आप हमें अपनी भक्ति प्रदान करने की कृपा करें नर नारायण की स्तुति से प्रसन्न होकर शिवजी बोले है नर नारायण अब तुम्हारी जो इच्छा हो वह वह हमसे मांग लो यह सुनकर नर नारायण ने कहा हे प्रभु आप इसी स्थान पर आपने पूर्ण अंश से स्थिर रहे तथा हमने अपने चरणों की भांति प्रदान करने की कृपा करें इस प्रार्थना को स्वीकार कर शिवजी उसे स्थान पर ज्योतिर्लिंग होकर अपने पूर्ण अंत से स्थित हो गए तथा केदार ईश्वर के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुए हे नारद जिस स्थान पर नर नारायण केदारेश्वर शिवलिंग का पूजन करते हुए स्थित है उसे स्थान को बद्री वन भी कहा जाता है वहां देवता तथा ऋषि मुनि आदि समय-समय पर पहुंचकर शिवजी का पूजन करते हैं केदारेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग भारत खंड के निवासियों के संपूर्ण पापों को दूर करने वाला है उसके दर्शन करने मात्र से ही संपूर्ण मनोकामना सिद्ध हो जाती है यदि कोई व्यक्ति जो केदारेश्वर का दर्शन करने जा रहा हो मार्ग में ही मृत्यु को प्राप्त हो जाए तो उसे भी मुक्ति मिलती है कि धारेश्वर शिवलिंग की महिमा अपार है हे नारद विष्णु जी के अवतार श्री कृष्ण चंद्र जी जब जरासंध से परास्त हो गए थे तब उन्होंने बद्री वन में जाकर केदारेश्वर शिवलिंग का बड़ा पूजन तथा तब किया था वह 7 महीने तक योग धारण कर केवल एक भाव से खड़े हो शिवजी का ध्यान धरते रहते थे उसे समय शिव जी ने प्रसन्न होकर उसे वरदान मांगने के लिए कहा तब श्री कृष्ण चंद्र जी ने उन्हें प्रेम या बाल की याचना की जिसे शिवजी ने प्रसन्नता पूर्वक प्रदान किया जिस समय राजा पांडु के पुत्र पांडव अपने पापों से मुक्ति पाने के हेतु के धारेश्वर शिवलिंग का दर्शन करने पहुंचे थे उसे समय शिवजी भैंस का रूप धारण कर वहां से भाग चले थे क्योंकि हुए या नहीं जानते थे कि ऐसे मा पापियों को मुक्ति किया जाए परंतु जब पांडवों ने उनकी अत्यंत विनय की और यह कहा कि आप हमारे पाप को दूर करके कृपा पूर्वक यही स्थिर रहे तब शिवजी अपने पिछड़े झाड़ से उसकी स्थान पर स्थित रहे गए जिसकी सेवा द्वारा पांडव के संपूर्ण दुख नष्ट हो गए शिवजी अगले छड़ से नेपाल में जा पहुंचे और हरिहर रूप धारण कर वहीं स्थित हो गए जो मनुष्य हरिहर शिवजी का दर्शन करता है उसके संपूर्ण पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं यह नारद आप भी शंकर ज्योति लिंग का वृतांत सुनो

Brahma Ji said, O Narada, my son, this beloved human became very glorious. He created Manusmriti and resolved all the disputes related to religion and ethics. He gave birth to three daughters and two sons, from whom he had many children. One of his sons was named Uttam and the other was named Priyavrata. In Priyavrata, he climbed on his chariot and roamed around the whole world like the Sun and divided the oceans and the seas. Seven sons were born from his house. Then, as per my order, he made his seven sons the owner of one island each and himself went to Sarnath in the service of Lord Shiva and attained the supreme position. His eldest son was Azim Namak, he became the owner of Jaanam island. A son named Anjit was born. Nabhik gave birth to this Sharpon Dev. Israr Ho Dev had 100 sons, out of whom the eldest son's name was Bharat. Bharat became the Chakravarti King. Out of the other sons, nine children became Yogis by accepting your understanding and 81 children became Siddhis. O Narada, Bharat became very illustrious in all the three worlds. All the children he had, whichever region became the king of, he named them by their names. It became famous that Rahu Manu's elder daughter named Aakriti was married to a sage named Ruchi. Ruchi performed a lot of penance for Vishnu ji to get a child. When Vishnu ji appeared before her and asked her to ask for a boon, Ruchi prayed to him that "O Lord, I want a son like me." Vishnu ji accepted her prayer and went into meditation. Then Vishnu ji himself took birth in two forms from Aakriti's side. Those two children were named Nar and Narayan. Ruchi and Aakriti initiated them, knowing them to be Vishnu's incarnation. Thereafter both were born Nar and Narayan. They reached the Himachal mountain for penance. The branch of Himachal is famous by the name Kedar. Both of them performed very difficult penance. They used to worship Lord Shiva and used to meditate continuously on earth. Then Lord Shiva was pleased and gave him his darshan. O Narad. Nar Narayan praised him a lot and said that O Lord, please bless us with your devotion. Pleased with the praise of Nar Narayan, Lord Shiva said that O Nar Narayan, now whatever you wish, ask for it from us. Hearing this, Nar Narayan said that O Lord, you remain stable at this place with your full part and we Kindly grant me the same as your feet. Accepting this prayer, Shivji became a Jyotirling and settled at that place with his full end and became famous as Kedar Ishwar. O Narada, the place where Nar Narayan is situated worshipping Kedareshwar Shivling is also known as Badri forest. Gods and sages etc. visit there from time to time and worship Lord Shiv. Kedareshwar Jyotirling removes all the sins of the residents of India. All wishes are fulfilled by just seeing it. If a person who is going to see Kedareshwar dies on the way, he also gets salvation. The glory of Dhareshwar Shivling is immense. O Narada, when Lord Vishnu's incarnation Shri Krishna Chandra was defeated by Jarasandha, he went to Badri forest and worshipped Kedareshwar Shivling. Then he used to meditate on Lord Shiv by standing in one posture by doing yoga for 7 months. At that time, Lord Shiv was pleased and asked him to ask for a boon. Then Shri Krishna Chandra gave him a boon. He requested for love or hair, which Shiva gladly granted. When the Pandavas, sons of King Pandu, had gone to visit Dhareshwar Shivling to get salvation from their sins, at that time Shiva took the form of a buffalo and ran away from there because he did not know how to liberate such sinners, but when the Pandavas humbly requested him and said that you please remove our sins and kindly stay here, then Shiva stayed at his place from his backyard, by serving which all the sorrows of the Pandavas were destroyed. Shiva reached Nepal from the next road and assumed the form of Harihar and stayed there. The person who visits Harihar Shiva, all his sins are destroyed.
