श्री शिव महापुराण कथा आठवां खंड अध्याय 28

ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा है नारद पूर्व काल में भीम नमक एक अत्यंत बलशाली दायित्व हुआ उसकी उत्पत्ति कुंभकरण के वीर्य द्वारा हुई थी भीम की माता का नाम कर कटी था वह अपनी माता सहित शाहनामक पर्वत पर निवास कर तीनों लोक को तिनके के समान उच्च समझा अनेक प्रकार से उपद्रव करने लगा एक दिन उसे देखने अपनी माता से यह पूछा है माता मेरे पिता का क्या नाम है और तुम यहां अकेली क्यों रहती हो मेरे पिता कहां चले गए हैं जो भी सत्य है बताओ उसे मुझे बताओ हे नारद अपनी पुत्र की बात सुनकर करकट ने उत्तर दिया है पुत्र तुम्हारे पिता का नाम कुंभकरण था वह रावण के छोटे भाई थे उन्हें दशरथ के पुत्र रामचंद्र ने मार डाल यह सुनकर भी ने पूछा है माता तुम मुझे यह बताओ कि कुंभकरण तथा रावण कौन थे राम कौन है और राम ने उन्हें क्यों मार डाल यह सुनकर कर काटने उन्हें सीता हरण से लेकर रामचंद्र जी के लंका पहुंचाने तथा व्यक्तियों का वध का वर्णन विस्तार पूर्वक का सुनाया फिर यह कहा यह पुत्र जब मैं विधवा हो गई तो माता-पिता के घर आकर रहने लगी

Brahma Ji has said that Narad, in ancient times, there was a very powerful warrior named Bhima. He was born from the semen of Kumbhakaran. Bhima's mother's name was Karkati. He lived with his mother on Shahnamak mountain and started creating many types of disturbances, considering all the three worlds as high as straws. One day, seeing him, Karkati asked his mother, "Mother, what is my father's name and why do you live here alone? Where has my father gone? Tell me whatever is the truth." O Narad, listening to his son, Karkati replied, "Son, your father's name was Kumbhakaran. He was Ravana's younger brother. He was killed by Dasharath's son Ramchandra. Hearing this, Bheema asked, "Mother, tell me who Kumbhakaran and Ravana were. Who is Rama and why did Rama kill them?" Hearing this, Karkati narrated to him in detail the abduction of Sita, Ramchandra's reaching Lanka and the killing of people. Then she said, "Son, when I became a widow, I came to live in my parents' house."
