श्री शिव महापुराण कथा दसवां खंड अध्याय 17

ब्रह्मा जी ने कहा हे नारद अब मैं सोमवार के व्रत की महिमा का वर्णन करता हूं सोमवार के व्रत को सभी स्त्री पुरुष कर सकते हैं जो लोग इस बात को करते हैं उनके दोनों लोग सुधर जाते हैं तथा उन्हें संपूर्ण मनोकामना की प्राप्ति होती है सोमवार का व्रत करोड़ों जन्मों के पापों को नष्ट करने वाला है वस्तु प्रत्येक शिव भक्त को उचित है कि वह सोमवार के दिन व्रत रखकर संध्या के समय शिव जी का पूजन करें जो विधान त्रयोदशी व्रत का है वही इस सोम प्रदोष के लिए भी उचित है शिवजी के अतिरिक्त इस व्रत में अन्य किसी देवता का ध्यान करना उचित नहीं है हे नारद सोम शिव का भजन करने से सभी लोग को अपने मनोरथ प्राप्त होते हैं इस व्रत के द्वारा भाग्यहीन सौभाग्य संतानहीन संतान तथा निर्धन अतुलित संपत्ति प्राप्त करते हैं विधवा स्त्री तथा कुंवारा पुरुष भी इस व्रत को धारण कर सकता है इस संबंध में हम तुम्हें इतिहास सुनते हैं इसके द्वारा तुम यह जान सकोगे की इस व्रत के प्रभाव से चित्र मृत्यु से किसी प्रकार बचा रहा तथा उसकी स्त्री ने किसी प्रकार इस व्रत को करके अपने पति सहित शिवलोक में स्थान प्राप्त किया हे नारद अत्रवृत्त देश में चित्र वर्मा नामक एक राजा परम प्रतापी धर्मात्मा दयाल यज्ञ करने वाला तथा शिव जी का परम भक्त था उसने अनेक सुंदर पुत्रों को जन्म दिया उसे समय बाद उसके घर में एक कन्या ने जन्म लिया वह कन्या भी परम सुंदरी थी जब उसने ज्योतिषियों को बुलाया उसका नया के लक्षण पूछे तथा ज्योतिषियों में ग्रह नक्षत्र का विचार करते हुए यह उत्तर दिया है राजन यह कन्या पति के समान श्रेष्ठ दमयंती के समान सुंदरी सरस्वती के समान बुद्धिमान लक्ष्मी के समान कलाओं का ज्ञान रखने वाली तथा आदित्य के समान शांत संतान वटी होगी इसका नाम श्रीमंती होगी या आठ पुत्रों को जन्म देगी तथा संसार में यश प्राप्त करेंगे ज्योतिषियों की यह बात सुनकर राजा तथा रानी अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुए उन्होंने ज्योतिषियों को बहुत सावधान दिया परंतु इस समय एक बुद्धिमान ब्राह्मण ने निविदा पूर्वक या कहा है राजन तुम्हारी यात्री 14 वर्ष की आयु में विधवा हो जाएगी इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है इस बात को सुनते ही राजा तथा रानी को अत्यंत शोक हुआ परंतु फिर धैर्य धारण कर उन्होंने सब ब्राह्मणों को विदा कर दिया तथा स्वयं भगवान सदाशिव का ध्यान धरने लगे हे नारद जब वह कन्या युवा अवस्था को प्राप्त हुई और उसने अपनी सहेलियों के मुख से या सुना की एक ब्राह्मण ने 14 वर्ष की आयु में मेरे विधवा हो जाने की बात कही है तो वह अत्यंत चिंतित एवं दुखी होकर यज्ञ वर्षालय मुनि की पत्नी मैथिली के पास जा पहुंची उसने मैथिली को दंडवत प्रणाम करने के उपरांत सब वृतांत का सुनाया तथा या प्रार्थना की आप मुझे कोई ऐसा उपाय बताएं जिससे मेरे पति की आयु की वृद्धि हो उसे समय मैथिली ने कहा कि राजपुत्री तुम भगवान सदा शिव तथा भगवती गिरिजा की आराधना करो तुम सोमवार का व्रत धारण करके सोम शिव का पूजन किया करो संध्या के समय भी शिवजी के पूजन करने के उपरांत ब्राह्मणों को भोजन करना तत्पश्चात स्वयं भोजन किया करना इस उपाय से शिव गिरजा प्रसन्न होकर तुम्हारे संकट को दूर कर देंगे यह विश्वास रखो मैथिली नया उपदेश प्रकार सीमावंती अपने घर लौट आई तथा विधि पूर्वक सोमवार का व्रत धारण कर उमा महेश्वर का पूजा करने लगी

Brahma Ji said, O Narada, now I will describe the significance of Monday fast. Monday fast can be observed by all men and women. Those who observe this, both their partners are reformed and they get all their wishes fulfilled. Monday fast destroys the sins of millions of births. It is appropriate for every Shiva devotee to observe fast on Monday and worship Shiva in the evening. The rule of Trayodashi fast is also appropriate for this Som Pradosh. Apart from Shiva, it is not appropriate to meditate on any other deity in this fast. O Narada, by worshipping Som Shiva, all people get their wishes fulfilled. By this fast, the unfortunate, the fortunate, the childless get children and the poor get incomparable wealth. A widow and a bachelor can also observe this fast. In this regard, we will tell you the history. Through this, you will be able to know that due to the effect of this fast, Chitra somehow remained saved from death and his wife somehow, by observing this fast, got a place in Shivalok along with her husband. O Narada, in the country of Atravritta, there was a king named Chitra Varma. The glorious, righteous Dayal was a yagya performer and a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He gave birth to many beautiful sons. After some time, a daughter was born in his house. That daughter was also very beautiful. When he called the astrologers, he asked about her signs and the astrologers, after considering the planets and stars, gave this answer: "O King, this girl will be as good as her husband, beautiful like Damyanti, intelligent like Saraswati, knowledgeable in arts like Lakshmi and calm like Aditya. Her name will be Shrimanti. She will give birth to eight sons and will achieve fame in the world. Hearing this from the astrologers, the king and the queen were very happy. They warned the astrologers a lot, but at this time a wise Brahmin said tenderly: "O King, your wife will become a widow at the age of 14, there is no doubt about it." On hearing this, the king and the queen were very sad, but then, gathering patience, they sent all the Brahmins away and themselves started meditating on Lord Sadashiv. O Narada, when that girl attained youth, she heard from her friends that a Brahmin had given her a son at the age of 14. When she told her that she had become a widow, she became very worried and sad and went to Maithili, the wife of Yagya Varshalaya Muni. After bowing down to Maithili, she narrated the entire incident and prayed that she should tell her a remedy by which the life of her husband would increase. At that time Maithili said, "Princess, you should worship Lord Sada Shiva and Bhagwati Girija. You should observe a fast on Monday and worship Som Shiva. In the evening also, after worshipping Lord Shiva, feed the Brahmins and then eat yourself. By this remedy Shiva Girija will become pleased and remove your problems. Have faith in this. Maithili gave the new advice. Seemaavanti returned to her home and started worshipping Uma Maheshwar after observing the Monday fast as per the prescribed method.
